Subway car blown up. at least 30 people dead, at least 200 injured, they are still taking the gibs out of the subway tunnel. I am not joking, about 30 people got literally gibbed. i want all our Russian members (like myself) to know that whoever did it will get punished. any thoughts? [addsig]

Chechens again? I doubt the Russian government is going to cave into some rebels just because of a bunch of bombings, it's more likely that they will just flatten Chechnya again... I really can't see how anyone can support the Chechens, but then again in this world...

I left Russia 3 years ago. my family's apartment was given to my grandparents. that's the worst thing. however, my grandparents and their cat were across Moscow for a car check-up that time. That's very fortunate. [addsig]

CNN.com makes it appear that lots of recent suicide bombings in Russia have been women. What's the deal? [addsig]

the palestinians have started to use women suiciders in israel too, because they're harder to search. they've also got 'more places' to hide the explosives, so to speak.

What proof do they have it was Chechens?! Methinks this is going to be a prime example of using 'terrorism' as a 'reason' to do things that should be unacceptable. It's a bloody modern day witch-hunt. But yes of course, I hope they do find the people responsible and make them rot in a gulag somewhere...

Russians have had many problems with the Chechens in the past. Remember that opera house s**tfest? Chechens. Something seriously s**tty is happening down there and the Russian government should really be looking at trying to find a good solution. What they have right now is just completely not working.

I've read that since december 2002 more than 300 people died in terrorist acts in Russia.

A) Like Leprous said, there is no proof that it is Chechen rebels who commited this atrocity - though it most likely is.

B) The Checnya troubles go WAAAAY back before the opera house, remember Yeltsins shenanigans with his conscript army being torn to pieces by guerrillas? The only way to shut them up (realistically) is to increase their rights/autonomous status or give them complete independence... something I can't see Putin doing anytime soon.

Maybe I'm being one-sided here, but like with the Palestinians, if these s**theads stop bombing everything and sort out their needs politically they're more likely to get somewhere. Oh boo hoo so Russia doesn't listen to us, there's other ways of getting your needs heard than killing innocent people. (*edit* i.e. international pressure- if you want your own country, you're going to need some good, clever people to do it, who should also be apt at arguing these points...)

Not necessarily, especially against uber-strong hardcore state leaders (Sharon for Israel, Putin for Russia) these things are nearly impossible to win over in certain countries.

Having said that, the Israelis are now actually dismantling their settlements in the Gaza strip and the west bank I believe - always a nice positive move forward... but will it say to the Chechens (et al, Tamil Tigers etc) that bombing does work?

Wait and see.... and of course, we can blame a lot of the problems on religion and colonialism... tssk - our mistakes always come back to haunt us!
