since i have never lived in a city where the bird population was a concern, i cannot fathom the dilemma, pigeon meat is edible, and should not be wasted, if the city happens to be in a poorer country, so much the better.. eat them, the diseases are carried in the feathers, and doo doo, not the meat..

still if birds are spreading diseases, kill them until it is remedied... arkansas had a blackbird problem when i was a child, millions of them descended upon the state, many never left.. i lost no sleep then, nor would i now, given the same situation.

as for the air-gun, i think all kids should have them and be taught how to respect them.. that way when they get something lethal later in life, the habits will be deeply entrenched, and it will be instinct, not to do something stupid with them.

/ 2 cents

They're as brainless as a staple, who gives a crap if you kill one- unlike with killing humans, there are literally no consequences of doing it whatsoever. People who try to empathise with animals should realise they have no emotions and can't 'care' about things like we do.

Because animals dont care for families etc...

My 2 cents on bird-shootin':

Pidgeons must be the stupidest birds on the planet. My house has a sort of indoor-outdoor area, theres big canvas panels where windows would normally be. Anyway, sometimes the door is left open, and pidgeons fly in (occasionally). THEY DONT LEAVE!!!! You need 3 people to "herd" the damn things out.

Once when I was 2 I was attacked by a magpie. The little bugger bit me in the neck. Apparently this was a particularly nasty one, so eventually the police came and shot it. So I dont really have anything against people shooting wild birds, atleast if they have a good reason. However, in most situations, I consider people who hunt for sport redneck hillbillies. "Gawd dang burds! Get offa mah LAND!!!!!!"

/2cents... oh and BTW, I have pet birds. I feed them every day and talk to them. Hows that for irony?

well here is my opinion about bird shooting:

birds are conscious beings, so as a general rule they should be preserved unless there is no other choice (if they are a pest, ie a threat to other species, a nuisance to people, etc)

certainly i believe you shouldnt shoot wild birds. In australia, birds are hardly ever killed, and there are plenty of trees in cities for the birds to live in. Anyway in australia hardly anyone owns a gun, unless you're a farmer or gamekeeper or law enforcement officer.

btw soz to antianticampersquad that his question turned into a debate :S

They're just as bad as games or violent TV etc., a means to an end IF you have problems- they're pretty safe in most people's hands.

yes but the point is - most people dont even NEED a gun. i mean the whole "everyone has the right to a gun, so they can defend themself" becomes ridiculous when people use this "right" to purchase firearms to attack other people.

imo it is simply better to restrict the use of firearms, so you can only get one after getting a license, like a driver's license etc.

i drive for a living, and believe me, the concept doesn't work, i would rather give guns to small children, then allow most of the USA the right to drive.

I believe that it is good to cultivate respect for life, rather than apathy towards it. I consider killing any creature for pleasure the act of a sick disposition.

That is not to say that killing a pigeon is anything like killing a person. But I still think it is wrong, unless there is a good reason.

for the most part, in my home, the rule is, you kill it, you eat it..

cuts down tremendously on the random bird slaying i assure you

think about it, you can render the gun inoperable... people driving habits border on the criminal..

i have seen things, that would scare you to impotence.. thats no exaggeration.

I'm not sure quite what you mean, Orph. I beleive what 2dmin is talking about is gun licensing, not letting everyone in the US drive.

I think gun licensing is a great idea. In australia, I'm not exactly sure about the system, but I think we have levels of licenses, for example:

Level 1 - Hunting rifles & shotguns, for farmers, hunters, gamekeepers.
L2 - Handguns (mainly collectors, mebbe farmers)
L3 - Automatics and stuff (you need to be a registered gun collector, have a ton of permits and stuff)

The higher the level, the more permits, background checks etc. you need. This isn't accurate, btw, just an example of how you can set out this kind of thing. Of course, law enforcement and the military are separate.

Under US law, would it be legal for a civilian to own nuclear weapons, artillery guns and the like? How far does this "right to bear arms" extend?

consider this, more people die each day from cars than guns.

accident is a misnomer when it is used in the context of cars colliding.

if a meteor fell from the sky and landed on your car, THAT is an accident, when 2 or more cars meet, that has a cause, people just ignore that fact and move on as if its normal.

let someone be shot and the world is ending for sure

driving permits (licenses) are a joke, the policy needs a serious overhaul, and i bet you any amount of money, if everyone took the same test i took to get my license, 50% or more of this world would never see the highway.

most people are just too stupid to drive.
