No, not at all! -If anything we should have some text that encourages users to upload their maps to our server. If we can get more maps onto our server, then we can ensure they'll be around for a long time!

Oh Wow!! Beautiful work larchy... and everyone else that has been involved! And another thing, I am very impressed by the speed, and the ability to post maps to the server..going to make things much easier. Hopefully one day in the next few years, when I'm not too busy with university, I can get back into mapping and finish some of my material that I deserted due to bugs, and finally have some maps to my name.
Great work everyone!
ps. wow I never knew about the number hilarious smileys available...or is that new too?

We've got 'unlimited' bandwidth and disk space, but exactly how 'unlimited' they are I'm not sure
I think the best thing is probably just to see how it goes... but tbh the site in general is image-heavy and uses quite a lot of bandwidth before even thinking about downloads. This may be something that we need to discuss and have a good think about.
I've got the sort of background level bandwidth down to about ~160MB per day with the new code (was 300-400), but even that is fairly hefty! There is a bit more stuff I intend to do but there ain't really much scope for reducing that without hacking away a load of the graphics...
-------------------
I have today added a system for logged in users to report dead links on maps. There is a little triangle next to each download link, and a backend system for admins to sort things out when you've reported a bad link.
Also, you get snarkmarks for reporting bad links (once the admin has dealt with it)

Quick question: Is it... "impolite" to actually use SnarkPit's new file hosting for maps instead of providing an external mirror?

Haha, I've thought about this before, I even used to avoid hosting my level images on Snarkpit because I thought it was "impolite".
But I think it is polite, they wouldn't implement a feature if they didn't want us to use it and also, by hosting your stuff on Snarkpit, your ensuring that maps/images won't be lost or deleted and whatnot, which makes it easier for the admins I guess because they don't have to deal with missing content and makes the Snarkpit as a whole, more "reliable.".

Everything seems to be running fine capt'n! Having been using the site, I've noticed I have been taking advantage of a lot of the new features and find that they are missing little things that would help to make them that much better. I've been waiting to post this until I had some substance to it.
-I have more but these are the 'refined' features I have for immediate disposal.
p.s. Thanks for adding that edit feature for journal entries. Should help to alleviate my woes about porn entry additions :P BTW, how many are allowed to appear on the front page?
- For the Map's page, can you either add another 'drop down list box OR three checkboxes that allow users to search through any of the first categories, but with conditions such as: Completed Maps; Beta Maps; and or Abandoned Maps. -This would help to alleviate some searching woes of mine
- When browsing a particularly long thread, some users I've received feedback on personally, talked about how they felt it was a bit annoying to have to scroll all the way down or up to remind them what topic they were reading (i.e. searching for the thread title), or to differentiate from separate tabs of the SnarkPit open in their browser. Is it possible to add thread titles to the header so that they appear in the page's tab?
- To re-iterate on the snarkmarks, (now that we have them in play), One user suggested we iterate a scalar value based on the NUMBER of ratings for a particular map; article; download. And not just the fluctuating rating for it. Because a map with the same rating as another one, may not be as POPULAR as that map because it doesn't have the same number of votes as it does. -Adding this value would have to affect the snarkmark count a bit I imagine. In terms of the more feedback you receive, the more demanding the expectations of you are. -And thus the snarkmark rating system can reflect that a bit better.
- -For users who have reached well beyond 200 snarkmarks, do we have the 'custom title' feature in place yet? I have seen no evidence of it yet? -(and have been asked about it).
- I've thought about it some, and realized that new members coming to the site may not know what we're really all about. Sure we have an 'about' page that talks about the history of us and how we came spawned into the world, but other than the subtitle on the header of every page, people stumbling here via a Google search or through some other website, have no way to quickly identify why we're different from everyone else. There's no Introduction explaining who we are and what we're about. And what kind of expectations we have or systems we use. I'm sure it can be a bit overwhelming. I think we need a separate page identifying these key elements and making it easily accessible to new users (no login required) and a link on the front page. It would let users know who the current admins are (in case they have questions) and answer questions like "is it impolite to upload to the Pit?" and really kind of present ourselves to newcomers to help give them an explanation about why we're still around and looking to help others improve their mapping skills. -Just a thought. question is: Where would it fit on the front page; do people agree with this or not? ( I might make a poll thread about it...) -What is the general consensus?
- -larchy, I'm currently working on a new set of forum icons to send to you for uploading. (in order to fit with the theme of the site a bit more) Right now I'm trying to get an animated flaming snark working for the hot topic threads :P The issue is, they are modified from the original site, meaning they are: 32x32 px in size; -will that be too big to fit in the current layout?
-I have more but these are the 'refined' features I have for immediate disposal.

I very much so agree with what you said about listing the forum topic in between each post, but as for the popularity of maps.
I think its a bit silly to give more snarkmarks to people with "more popular maps", its starting to sound like a competition, but I think it has its benefits such as it encourages people to rate maps and want their maps to be rated and whatnot. I think this needs to be balanced with the marks awarded for higher rated maps also so that a person with a 5/5 map rating is likely to receive more points than a person with a 1/5 map that is popular.
As for the "L" next to people's name, I think that should be removed or changed. It gets to me a little bit that Haymaker has an "L" next to his name, what exactly is the factor that decides who is and isn't an "L"? I sure hope it isn't number of forum posts or number of maps etc. I think it should be a time period of say 30 days instead.

L plates are removed when you get 50 snarkmarks.
There is no custom titles feature just yet.
The forum thread title does appear in the web browser title bar. Because it is preceded by 'The Snarkpit - <forum name> - ' the actual thread title is probably being pushed off the small space you have on a tab. I can reverse the order to fix this issue.
Map page search filters - no prob.
Snarkmark calculations - down to you lot really, I'll just the change the calculation to whatever people want. It's based off the average rating currently. I don't really like the idea of getting more snarkmarks just because a map/download/article is more popular and I think we talked about this on the Alpha site. Still, whatever you guys decide!
We could just add a faq page for all the introduction stuff. We could have a link to it... oo, I dunno... amongst the footer links (about.donate/contact etc)? Probably link in the control panel too... an auto-pm with a 'welcome to snakrpit, read the faq' message for newly registered users?
Icon sizes shouldn't be a problem because I'll just...er... resize them :P
The current ones are 14x14, so you'll probably be making each line bigger to accomodate 32 height. Bear in mind they have to stack alongside each other for new&old/sticky/locked/hot etc. the bugs thread at the top of the forum has three icons for example - 66px is a lot of space for icons! I mean... take a screenie of the forums and 'shop yours into place, see how it looks, have a play about. There'll be a way of making them work!
Oh, and I was thinking about reducing the number of front page journal entries... three or four maybe? It might be 6 currently.

Riven, I guess your suggestion goes a little beyond that, but I always liked the "Hello, new users!" message on the front page for non-registered members. I don't know if that still exists? I guess the main challenge is to explain the Snarkpit in 2 sentences of text.

One other immediate feature request:
I didn't say 'between each post' I said in the header of pages.
-Sounds good. Crono will be happy
Aaron, I think you misunderstood me. Let me clarify: The more votes a map receives the more weight those ratings get. But the weighted points shouldn't out-do a map with fewer votes and higher ratings. Maybe it isn't necessary, but I feel this makes more sense, -which is why I bring it up. I haven't thought out the math involved or anything, but I think it could come into play after a map here has received more than 10 votes, then the more votes it gets, the more points (snarkmarks) an average rating of 5/5 stars or #/5 stars tributes to the author. That is to say, (I guess I'm gonna have to think about the math now
) maps can receive a max of 50 snarkmarks right now if they have 5/5 stars. Let's say a map has an average rating of 4/5 stars which would tribute the author with 40 $SM. Now once that map has received 11 votes each vote over 10 could add +1 $SM to the total tribute of $SM for the author. So the user [in this example] would get 41$SM for his 4/5 star rated map with 11 votes.
-Now, I'm adding the +1 $SM to make it easy on myself. Doing that wouldn't actually weight the score for the maps, it simply tributes more points for maps with more votes. I hope that gets the point across a little better? -And yes I remember talking about this before; I bring it up again because I feel I have a better understanding of it now, and have received requests for it...
Sounds splendid. Yea, we can call it an 'FAQ' and I'm good for locating it down at the bottom. The welcome message sounds like a good idea too. It can link to the FAQ and let users know who to contact with direct questions. And be very brief. -Like you said reaper, describe the SnarkPit in two sentences or less. Although, to direct new users further to read their 1st PM, I suggest some kind of extra layer that could appear as a word balloon or bright arrow pointing to the 'messages' link. Just to let them know they have a brand new message that is very important for them to read. (or we could include it on the confirmation page after they log-in for the first time. Now we need to settle on what actually should be said for new users. If you have time reaper, would you like to write up a short draft? -Or perhaps come up with a draft for the 2-sentence description? I'll write a draft when I get the time (and patience) to do so. We can start a separate thread or talk about it in here, whoever gets to it first, or posts in here first; I don't care.
-Sounds easy enough
-Working on it!
Number of Journal entries for the front page? -4 I think would be fine.
-Speaking of auto archiving, I recall on the old pit an archive for front page posts and user 'journals' (although they weren't called journals then). Instead of having to sift through the pages of front-page posts, perhaps we can create an 'archive' page that keeps a list of everyone's journal entries, and front page news, and spotlights (about archived spotlights> it would record when they were added, and when they were removed [not the order in which they appeared on the front page or anything]).
I know you said it may not be necessary to archive general banter, but can we make that a function for when we are ready to do so?
-And last but not least, the link to the IMDB rating system sounds somewhat like what I'm thinking in terms of weighted ratings.
-Whew, typing that turned out to take a lot longer than I thought!
- -We need to return the BBcode help button and page to the reply sections.

Very minor gripe: Youtube links should recognize the whole "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmkVWuP_sO0" and not just "KmkVWuP_sO0". Shouldn't be so hard to parse that out?

The tags are made to be the same as phpBB3 so we don't end up confusing people with bbcode that works differently from everywhere else.
Because of the way phpBB3 parses their tags it is very difficult/impossible to match the full link, so the vast majority of forums use the way I've done it here.
I can add some code to match the full URI in addition to the existing tags for us tho!

No worries, I'm actually really disappointed with imageshack and don't recommend it to people anymore. I've found that a small array of images, different everytime, can be unavailable for days, probably due to server issues. I've also permanently lost some images, mainly older ones I've uploaded 1 or 2 years ago.
In regards to the "L" plates, 50 snark marks? That strikes me as a bit much. I think it should be a 30 day time period as I mentioned before or 30 posts or something. I mean sure, people with less than 50 snark marks could probably not be considered "regulars" but for a member to have been here for 5 years and occasionally visit, I am ofcourse talking about Dedi, having "L" plates next to their name is a bit unfair. Not to mention Haymaker who has been around here for longer than I have for memory, and I'm sure all active members know him, but also has "L" plates.

I've disabled your signature because the imageshack image links were taking around 45s to load, your two posts on this page making the page take over 90s to load.

Well, like I said in another post, this version release refreshes my faith in the Snarkpit staff! This brings me back to the "good ol' days" when navigation and feature array made sense! Great job!

A feature where topics that you've seen will turn grey, and new topics with a new post will turn yellow or green or anything alike would be very nice.
