I currently have an old Razer Boomslang 2000, which is horrible and sticky and falling apart. I need to replace it pronto, so I'm panning for opinions.

My priority is gaming precision, despite the fact that I play infrequently. So far I've heard good things about the Logictech MX310. Another possibility is a replacement Razer, but I suspect they are outclassed by today's optical mice.

Opinions? Thoughts? Polemic tirades?

Gamers who buy these expensive mice are being done over, so to speak. I'm using a Packard bell optical mouse that works a treat, and it only cost me ?10 for Dixons. [addsig]

I use a logitech trackball and have no problems with it. The only thing it lacks is a wheel but I make do otherwise with that and a Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback 2. Nice combo, especially for hl and BF 1942. BTW, I hate using a keyboard to game, and I've seen these game claws type thingy controllers. Anybody got any input on which might be nice to try for a keyboard inept gamer????

I currently use http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=004

Its the greatest thing I ever laid my hand on.

By the way, the last thing I would recommend is a cordless mouse. They lack battery life and they are slower than corded mouse. Last time I tried a cordless, I could bearly play Half-Life due to the mouse lag.

[edit]
The addition of the "forward" and "back" internet buttons not only make internet surfing much more fun, but they can also be used in games for either reload buttons, change ROF, or change weapon whatever.

My mouse cost me 60$ (Can cur) when a standar 2 button ball mouse would cost between 10$ and 15$. But it IS worth it.

I find the MS intellimouse too bulky - I like to hold a mouse in my fingers rather than the palm of my hand.

Yes, Gollum, once again, you're right . . .

I'm partial to Logitec (none of their courless crap though) I've got a standard three button optic mouse and I woop on people, so Its good, however, I really can't imagine not having the wheel anymore. It only cost $15 because it's black, the normal (white) model is $13. A friend of mine went overkill and bought a $40 logitec, granted its a damn nice mouse, I'd never find the use for 7 buttons (only five are usable in games)
I did see a Logitec uh MX300 I think . . . anyway, it was pretty cool, it was basically what I had, but with some silver and two extra buttons which would be really nice for up coming games (taking that you have so many freakin' buttons to use, I'm running out of room on my keyboard, Far Cry, for example has controls I didn't even know of, like "hold your breath") it was only $30, so I might consider picking it up at some point.

Anyway, I don't want to be a "thread killer" so to speak (you bastards lol) so that's all from me [addsig]

I'm sorry. . . lol Just kidding . . . I just can't stand Microsoft's mouse "architecture" Gollum said it best I must say, once again. By the way I can probably assume that "basic" mouse cost you "basically" $30-$50 lol. (I'm not making fun of you, gimp, it's just MS is known for overpricing questionable products.)

Anyway, to each his own.

As long as the mouse has two buttons and a wheel I'm fine. I've never really come across an instance where the mouse hindered me, as it's all about getting used to a certain sensitivity.

I've got a basic (and driverless) logitech mouse from 1996 or somesuch that replaced my big MS optical mouse which I broke, and that mouse replaced a generic Compaq one I got with my first computer...there are far more important parts of the computer to worry about for good gaming, like a sharp monitor, a fast 3d card, ram, etc etc. The per-pixel accuracy of a mouse ain't no thang, especially when I don't play games that require me to aim at single pixels...

Don't knock microsoft mice. If microsoft only made mice, nobody would have a bad thing to say about them.

Sorry, no, the one thing I hate almost more then anything from Microsoft is their mice. It's just a physical comfort issue, they're bulky and uncomfortable, well for me anyway. I'm not saying don't use one, its up to you, I just don't like them. [addsig]

im using the MS intellimouse explorer v3, 5 buttons, scans at 6000 times a second. it cost me $90 australian, which i guess is about 40 pounds. i also have a $60 aus mousepad, the everglide ricochet 2.52 smiley

if you dont like the bulkiness of the intellimouse then i'd say definately go logitech. but maybe an mx500 if you have the money

If you have a laptop, totaly go for a dual-sensor optical. they work on almost any surface with precision. the main reason I got it was that I was having touble mapping with my single-sensor model. on rougher surfaces I simply could not click on individual verticies consistantly. [addsig]

I use a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical, it's the nicest mouse I've seen, it costs like $20 CDN isn't bulky like you'd like to say, plays all games nice 'n smooth. [addsig]
