So I was working on my laptop last night, and was ready to leave studio to head for home. It was 2:30 in the morning, and I would have class at 8:00, so I decided to leave my laptop on my desk, to pick up after I returned for class in 5 1/2 hours.

Shutting it down, I noticed the ever-familiar 'Install Security Updates' icon for the shutdown button. Realizing it's always a good idea to keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Vista (32 bit Home Premium) I decided to let it do its thing while I leave it be and head home.

Upon returning to Studio for class, I power up my laptop and realize it's taking a very long time to start up (after the welcome screen). It took a good 10 minutes before it finally brought me to my desktop. For which I noticed over half my icons were gone, and all my quick links next to the start button had disappeared. Upon further investigation, I realized the Vista update deleted or removed all of my personalizations. That is to say, sound settings, individual program settings, (anything located in the 'documents' folder) were either gone or reset. -Tis a shame really. How well do they test these updates before fucking everyone over?

I've been Googling it for the past hour without any other notification showing up from other users. -Is this an isolated event? -There's nothing stopping me from re-formatting now!

Lesson learned: turn automatic updates off, and research before blindly accepting another update from Microsoft. -My laptop served as a buffer for my desktop, so nothing on my main work computer has been messed-up (yet). -So I'm not wholly out of commission, just a little distraught.

Service Pack 2 RTM is on MSDN, should be public in a couple of weeks!

W7 RC1 next week too smiley

Don't do anything else on your laptop.
1) Download a program called recovu (recover?), run it and see what comes up.

2) Start a search for *old*. Vista just doesn't delete things, it always does something with them.

The first step will find recently deleted files, although I don't believe that this will turn anything up because I know vista just doesn't delete things willy nilly. I just placed it fist in case something did.

The second searches for anything with the word old in it. If vista wanted to move/get rid of files it would place or rename them as something with the old name in it.

Are you sure your logged into the right account? Look under the C:Users Folder for your files

If all else fails: System restore (if you have it turned on) to a date before you did this update.

Otherwise Windows vista's updates I really dont have to think about at all. There has got to be something that happened thats simple.

The iso on that torrent has the same SHA1 and md5 as the MSDN copy - it is legit!

If you're unsure the public download will be up next week.

Well, it would seem the restore point saved my butt once again! Recuva was not necessary here, but I will keep it in case I ever do need it. I had backed off from using my laptop because I was a little depressed about the potential of loosing some things and having to reset all my configurations for individual programs. I finally decided to check it out tonight, and checked the remaining saved restore points and sure enough that earliest restore point was the night it happened. So I sure as hell checked it, and started the restore process. Upon restarting, everything was back to normal!

Thanks for the help guys; it's always good to know that not all hope should be lost, for hope is the mother of all men!. -Now to get back to work on that compilation map! smiley smiley

I know what it was about.. your the people who derailed it off topic.. I was just contributing to the derailment.

I just had a nice virus on my Vista Laptop.. the BRONTOK virus.. I hate that virus. I dont know how I got it.. it all of a sudden appeared after a Vista update.

Had to format and reinstall.

Yeah I am aware of that.. But since I dont open e-mail attachments.. I dont know how I got it. =)
