Recently we had someone post a topic on ABORTION. I don't feel this is the place to discuss such matters, nor POLITICS, or RELIGION. This is a Mapping/Model/Mod site. We should be discussing things related to this hobby we share. Want to have general banter.. make it about cars, or sports, or some other stupid fun topic, and argue over that. But Leave your Political, Religious, Bullcrap for your blog, facebook, twitter page. Want to talk about that crap there, link us, and I will give you an eye full of text on my feelings on stuff.

Want to see, here is my Facebook:

Maybe Twitter is your thing:

Ok, my blog: ( dont use it much )

It is "general banter", and most of the active posters hear don't even map much anymore. Good debates, whether or not they are belligerent and or stupid, are the life blood of a speech based community. It keeps people interested.

Reality has become a commodity.

They don't map any more? why not?

Speaking of Mapping if I add a 3D sky box to my map does it have to have the other skybox still?

Sometimes you want a pause when it's about mapping. After 6 months or something, when you have the time again, you will map again.

The people still post in the General Banter about random stuff because they want to share their thoughts, and want to stick to the community.

Yes but what about my 3D skybox Question?

muhnay, this community is about more than mapping, it's about a bunch of guys that we feel we can talk to about whatever we want as well, that's they way the pit has always been

if you want to talk about mapping we have forums for that general banter, as stated previously, is just for that

and yes a lot of us have been off of mapping for various reasons, I haven't mapped in years, just haven't found the inspiration, am lazy and useless, I dunno

either way, I stick around anyway because you're all my boys

Why be so hostile against religious, political, or abortion related topics? No one is making you read the stuff people post in general banter, and the topics are completely valid and interesting. Plus if I'm not mistaken, you've posted in the past your opinion in such threads. -So what's the big deal?

Why wouldn't you want to "give [us] an eye full of text on [your] feelings on stuff" right here? Whatever the reason, I find it kind of selfish to be calling out thread starters of such topics "Asshats." I can understand if you don't care for it, but let's not be an asshat ourselves smiley

And I mean all this in the most sincerest voice; I don't like to piss people off, I just felt passionate enough about this because I also fall into your category of "asshats."

About your 3D skybox question. -Well, you can't leave ares of your map open to the void, so they must remain covered. Areas you want you players to be able to look up and out to see your 3D skybox, you will still want to use the Skybox texture. So yes, you must keep both* skyboxes.

The title is called a Fish Hook.. its is there to capture you and reel you in.. I too am an Asshat... when I said that I was calling us all out. The reason for the topic is, My grandmother taught me a golden rule.. never talk of Politics or Religion in mixed company, nothing good can ever come of it.. It being Halloween, and her being dead, and I remembering her, was sharing this golden rule she taught me.

And to be honest it was a way for self promotion too.. it gave me a way ti link my other pages. Ok so I like to be provocative.. And fast.. Your my boy'o too.

Well quite, Muhnay! I feel perhaps you do enjoy the community discussing topics such as abortion, perhaps you are fearful of the conversation being upset. I'd say you shouldn't need to worry - we have all, the active users, been through the arguments many times over and prefer a good discussion nowadays. I know me and you have had crossed words in the past on old time Snarkpit topics, but we now see the better way to discuss it.

Don't let any one person get you down, and join in the discussion. What we have had so far as to discussions involving recent members are much better than the old days. smiley

I don't see what's wrong with these sort of discussions. I think they benefit the community as it gives people an opportunity to converse. If you want to have discussions about level design then please be my guest. It's true that a lot of people here don't do any modding anymore but I and a few others still do and I don't see myself burning out anytime soon or shifting my priorities, especially since I want to get in the industry.

Also sports and cars are kind of boring (for me) and this is a pretty multicultural place (mainly North American and European) so I imagine talking about sports would be a bit hard.

I think the things I would be most interested in talking about are games and games development, philosophical discussions (abortion and religion included), and lifestyle things.

Why not? Do people take themselves so seriously they can't have friendships with people who think differently? I think not plus this is the interwebs, non confrontational and there is a certain degree of anonymity so it's a lot less risky. smiley

You know it's interesting you should say what your grandma told you, because even though I don't agree that we shouldn't discuss everything, because the Pit is a bunch of great people, back a couple of years ago, I had to quit my philosophy class which I had elected to do as a subject, because the majority of the class hated me just for my views.

Eg. Scenario 1:

You are in a jungle somewhere in a remote part of the world, and you come across an old friend who you were very close to. He is now a part of the secret service and is about to assassinate 20 innocent people. You tell him to stop, and he says to you, "Ok I will not kill anyone, on the condition that you shoot one of them"

I said that there is no way I'd pull the trigger at an innocent person, and the entire class disagreed and disliked me since.

Scenario 2:

Should IVF be legal for lesbians?

I answered no, because I believe that a child has a right to a parent of each gender because parents are the primary role models for children, and they should be exposed to both, so they will know how to treat both genders with proper respect. I also added that I am against gay marriage, and afterwards my entire class hated me so much, I was left with no choice but to withdraw from the class.

So what I'm trying to say with these two things is, sometimes it's good to discuss all opinions we have, given that we know the type of people we're dealing with. Sometimes, however, people can be very cruel, and it's good to remain uninvolved.

I sincerely believe that The Snarkpit members are a great deal more mature than my 'year 10 philosophy' class ever was, and we can engage in any discussion without having daggers for each other. And so in my opinion, any topic put forward by anyone on The Pit should be welcomed with further discussion and own opinions, regardless of how diverse they may be.

Wow, it is pretty ridiculous that you ended up having to leave the class, and a philosophy class no less! Whether or not I agree with your opinions I'd never suggest you weren't entitled to them. I wouldn't say that your opinions are so far out that they ought to spark outright hatred either, though obviously the gay marriage issue in particular is always going to be a flammable topic!

I think a community like this should always be open to any sort of discussion. I see muhnay's point about "never talk about politics/religion/etc in mixed company", but I don't believe it applies to a forum such as this. That "rule" is very helpful in avoiding putting people on the spot, offending them, or making them feel awkward in amongst other people, but on a forum if a person can't really be made to feel that as if they don't want to discuss their views or read the views of others they can simply ignore the thread.

Wow, what a crappy philosophy class.

It's a rather real problem, too. Comparable to a discussion we had in Austria, after terror fears regarding the Euro 08 Football championship: If a plane is hijacked, flying towards a stadium (9/11 scenario), should the air force be allowed to shoot it down? It was ultimately decided not to be allowed based on human rights issues. You can't play one group of people against another, even if one is bigger. Concretely speaking, there is the slightest of chances the people on the plane, for example, manage to regain control. You have to grant them that chance even if there is a risk for others.

Don't get me started on gay rights, though... smiley If you are born gay (it's not a goddamn "life style" or "choice") and you feel the same intense feelings of love towards a same-sex partner... why should you not be able to live in a marriage? Also a same-sex couple that adopts a child and loves and cares about it is still better than a crappy hetero couple of single parent or, most importantly, living in an orphanage.

What was this thread about again? smiley
