Well, I picked up a virus from somewhere the other day, my antivirus picked it up but not before it killed my notepad and my svchelp file. I tried re-installing windows but it didn't re-install those files. Is there anyway I can re-install these files without re-formatting? I also tried repairing windows but still no luck.

Well, first off check to see if the virus is still there, because it might be.

Then goto add/remove programs and then Add/Remove Windows components.

Uncheck Accessories, and continue, this will un-install your accesories, then go back to add/remove after restarting and select them again so they'll be freshly installed.

If that doesn't work you can always just copy notepad.exe from someone elses computer (along with other exes that aren't working at that point).

Other then that, it sounds like the virus is still there. When you re-installed windows, did you delete the windows partition and then install it? or did you just slap it right on top of the old installation? [addsig]

I was looking in that very dialog in the details for accesories and notpad is not on that list (in xp anyway)

I know it isn't listed, however, it is an accesory, a mandatory one. Reinstalling the accessories might fix it. You have no REAL way of knowning unless you try. But I'm thinking the files are there just corrupted. Because it sounds like Diablo just slapped a new copy of Windows on top of his Old one, which by the way doesn't fix anything really, unless you did a repair mode or whiped your drive and started over. Most errors don't go away because they aren't problems with the installation, but maybe another program that is blocking the execution in someway, in which case it wouldn't work if you just re-installed the thing because it isn't a file the Windows Install is aware of.
Also, formatting and re-installing are last resorts, you really shouldn't do it just because a couple programs don't work, even if they are something seemingly vital, such as Notepad. [addsig]

I'm pretty sure it's svchost.exe, and this would make it the blaster worm, which you can completely fix with the tool fixblast.exe from the symantec website.

You can survive quite easily without notepad- just use Wordpad, or one of the many 'upgraded' notepads on the internet. Yeah, and what Jeff said

well it seems this virus does not wanna go away. I've scanned my disk several time with system restore turned off yet the virus always comes back, infecting my exe files. Theres 2 virusses that are doing this.

I seem to be getting this virus whenever I'm connected to the net, like it's not on my hardrive. I also tried that fixblast file u mensioned scary, but it came with the same results as panda.. nothing.

Download AVG and have it running then to stop yourself from getting a virus every time you connect to the internet! (do you not have a firewall either- free Kerio firewall- or the latest windows updates..?)

it is a pain for 56k users i bet, but anyone with broadband that doesn't have their updater set to auto is asking for trouble.

Good ol' Nachi. There is a huge complicated process to remove this. Give me a sec and I'll find it for you. Once it finds a computer it reinfects every 30secs, jamming up networks. It took down our entire school network once. It was originally designed to wipe out MSBlast, but it turned out to cause more problems than it solved. [addsig]

Okay. Here we go. First things first get Windows updated properly. That should fix Nachi properly, which you shouldn't be getting unless you haven't updated Windows. Next, get something like ZoneAlarm to prevent access attempts from Trojans. This combined with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware can be very secure. Next port of call is Norton. Thats all I can come up with I'm afraid. [addsig]

That has to be a joke...I swear the thing encourages viruses not stops them.
