I tried playing CS1.6 but it seems to give some beautiful ping shots of 600 and renders it unplayable...what an amazing upgrade.

STEAM out WED.

CS1.6 Out SEPT 30 or there abouts, at that time CS1.5 will no longer function as well as any other valve game outside Steam.

Steam will be needed to play any Valve game in a couple weeks. Get ready for the conversion..

I think Valve are forgetting than many people (read MOST of the UK!) don't have access to broadband et al, which kind of renders Steam pretty damn useless.

What was wrong with the old system?

STEAM

Thats a link to steam, I think it best discribes what it is.

But the short answer is.. its a client to play any and all Valve games, sorta like how you play Bizzard games on Blizzard.net.

The old system allowed you to play Valve games Half Life, Team Fortress, Counter Strike and the like useing the WONID system. Vavle either by choice or by force is no longer useing the WONID system and has opted to use STEAMID system starting by the end of this month.

Steam will im my opinion better the CS community, by helping with the hacker problem that is so rampent.. bringing it all under one roof so to speak. I also think this will help the League/ladder community as well in the long run.

This will play hell with cyber cafes that have got retail software though, as the new Steam client will require cafe owners to purchese special software lic though steam in order to pertisapate in any Valve game. I know this from personal experiance.

More than you asked for Diablo.. but I hope it helps.

/me has to wonder.. didn't everyone complain about the old system, before steam to

look guys, broadband or not, it just looks like another way of distributing in essence, new patches..

if you could, or had to get a 69 meg patch the old way, you can get it thru steam as well..

it seems to me, that your biggest bitch is that valve is cutting out the mirror links maybe by localizing the system to its own name/brand .. this may cause server tie ups IMO, but still... its only a new delivery system..

whether i am right, or talking out my ass, it makes no difference, we will be stuck with it till it either works, or the scrap it in lieu of the old system.. face it, till it fails, its here, get used to it

One thing to look forward to with the new Steam is having to start fresh with your config.  So let's say you use custom weapons, models, sprays, fonts...whatever, when ya play online...ya gotta get that all new.

I played last nite on a Steam server, and until someone said you had to transfer your player models, your maps,  your config, everyting...over to the Steam folder, then I was playing at dead default...even my screen size and mouse sensitivity had to be reset.

Still...it played ok.  There wasn't any lag.  Only real bitch I had was while downloading a map, there was no status bar which showed download progress, so I didn't know if the server had crashed.  Also, pressing ESC didn't do anything either...so I waited and luckily the server didn't crash.

I agree with Orph tho.  No sense bitching about this new program because there's nothing we can do.  It's what Valve wants to do for the community...and until they get it perfected, we have to suffer along with it if we want to play any Valve game.

Surely launching Steam at the same time as HL2 would have made a whole bunch more sense though?

I don't personally like it cos it was yet another thing for me to d/l (sure, only 500k but thats still a good five minutes of waiting at least). And to make matters worse, when I installed it, it had to 'update' which took another 30mins to do - and i'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it's going to want to 'update' more or less every time I connect to the internet.

Regarding the latest patches and whatnot - does Steam support resumable downloads? I hope so, as i'm more or less scuppered otherwise

correct me if i am wrong ( its been ages since i played online HLDM, but say you joined a server with a new map you didn't have and the rotation occurred before upload was complete... then tomorrow you joined server again, and upload finished.. it was my understanding that HL stored the partial uploaded map somehow and knew what it was for the next time it came up... seems to me valve would keep this method, since it worked so well for us 56k users..(yeah i had 56k then too) i am betting some sort of a resume factor will be Incorporated, simply because some of these new maps could measure upwards of 10 megs i bet..

Actually, this seems like a sensible thing to do..allowing Steam enough time to work out its kinks, before the release of HL2.

If Steam completely ruins everything, it's Quake 3 / Ut2k3 editing for me. Time for a better engine anyway. [addsig]

i dunno if i would consider quake 3 a step up from HL 2 tho

still, since i map for myself, even if the only folks to ever see a map i make for HL2 because of steam,is the guys at snarkpit, i would still be content..

this threat you all perceive, is nothing more than a slight inconvenience to me..

Ah, so you run from a 5 year old game in HL to a... 4 year old game in Quake 3? [addsig]

Quake 3 is a good engine, but still I"ll still always like the Hammer editor over all. Time will tell, most likely nothing will happen, I'm just paranoid.

Steam does not resume downloads, it's very, VERY, 56k unfriendly.... it's coming to the days when companies assume that US is the only country in the world, ignoring other countries which have 56k still.

Look at SWG, not one UK server!
