Thank you Riven and anyone else who got it back up. Surely the forums are not so active anymore but the database is something we shouldn't ever hope to lose. smiley

For whoever may read this: How is everyone doing?

Hey Nib!

Yea, after sweating over it for a good month, I was worried if I could get anything figured out. Then faced it one night with Crono to help out.

I believe there was an issue with the password to the SQL database The SnarkPit is built on; it was reset, and that password was thankfully stored within the code of the site. Found it, plugged it back into the server host site, and everything connected back up!

I think it was Flynn who started a Memorial thread on Interlopers which I found and realized the state of the mapping community, -having been disconnected for some time now.

It's definitely a quieter place out here on the Kuiper Belt of the game development community. Focus has been driven forward with the pervasiveness of Unity, and continued success of the Unreal Engine. Source mapping was apart of a timeworn style of mapping that has proven its capability, but in a market of Swiss Army Knife game engines, has been outclassed now, -forcing it to an exclusive corner of game development.

Essential Skills to build games in Source don't crossover well into other engines, and that's a deficit to Source developers looking to expand their repertoire.

Anyhow, I've been doing good. This past year, I've been working my butt off, and studying for my architecture licensure exams. I've passed one, and have 6 more to go. This is the year, I try to wrap that up. Most of my nights will be spent at the coffee shop with a big binder, earphones, and a large latte, trying to highlight the nonsense from these study guides. smiley smiley

Feel free to hit me up over email next time Riven, I'm not too well versed in PHP, but its decently similar to Perl in many regards, my SQL Admin skills aren't have bad either, the error message suggested to me that either the MySQL account was changed, or a permission on said account was changed.

In fact I sent you an email (your @genecy.net account) back on 12/28/15 asking if you needed assistance.

Given the low volume of traffic, have you considered hosting the site on AWS?

Good, I was worried for a bit. All that data, maps and so forth, lost would be a tragic event. I can recall when ejoop went away all the stuff I made was lost. Thanks Riven for all you do to maintain the site. If you need my help just ask.

Maybe we need another map contest or something.

I've always loved your map contests G4MER, most of the time because of the inactivity on the site there weren't a lot of participators but I enjoyed the challenges.

I hope we can bring back some more people here so that we could have a fun map contest again.

How have you been anyway?

Edit: Actually posted my 1000th post with this one!

First off, congrats on the 1000th post.

I am good, thanks for asking.

I want to do another one someday.. do a game on the winners steam wish list that is under 20 bucks as the prize. Maybe get people interested in the contest via the Steam group.

You have always done some amazing work Nib, the mall one was amazing, and the house you did for the old picture was outstanding... looking forward to what you do next.

Thanks G4MER!

I'd love to see another contest. I really enjoy those "Recreate this scene" kind of challenges.

And I'm glad you liked my previous entries. Especially the mall one took me a long time because I made it into a whole playable surival level.

I'm currently mapping for the Thief engine using Dromed, which works a little different, but I don't mind going back to hammer editor.

Holy shit, I haven't visited here since the site went down!

Good to see it back online again! I have a lot of memories on this website, specifically of my teen years from being 14 when I registered to when I made my first map in 2005, to my last map in 2009.

I notice a lot of people here seem to work in the computer industry, I too tried to follow that at college but realised I wasn't so much into computers so much as playing games on them! Now I am just a bum smiley

I actually used to get by with a low powered out of spec laptop, which I replaced in Nov 2013 with a bang up to date gaming PC build.

This spurred me on to start work on a new map, but I haven't touched it since Jnuary and even then I only did a little bit. Kinda lost inspiration for it.

Good to see the old timers checking in. Well, I remember when Le Chief was called "Aaron_da_killa" and I remember when he was new! Man the eras that have passed are crazy.

I remember thinking the mid '00s were super futuristic and modern but now we are getting towards 2020 and I am only getting older and older smiley

Hey Flynn, good to see you smiley

I was also here back when Le_Chief was Aaron_da_killa smiley

My active years have been 2009 - 2012, but I've known the site since I was an 8 year old kid playing Half-Life 1 against bots on custom maps from here.

Yes, happy memories eh? It's amazing how your memory has things down as "recent" until you actually stop to think and realise how long ago they were.

Oh to go back to the '00s again!

You have my thanks for keeping the place alive. I swear, I'm coming back for good once HL3 is out!

By the way: I'm shocked to look back and see that I created my account here in 2001. I've literally been posting on Snarkpit for over half the time I've been alive.
