After years of waiting, I've finally got ADSL. Me and my 4 flatmates just got it installed today. We went for a 1mb connection since there are a lot of us sharing, and at the moment we are just sharing the connection through a hub as our router hasn't arrived. Fingers crossed it will run better shared with the router with all its dynamic bandwidth sharing malarky.

Anyway, got Steam and my account name is reno84, so anyone who wants to add me can do. Will be the first time in ages I might actually play some HL again Couldn't have come at a better time either, what with UT2004 just arriving through my door on friday and all!

duncan, welcome to the club

i dunno about your dsl modem, but mine took 10 whole days to get up to full steam, it started at like 100k, and now is up to 1.5 MBps.. give yours a week before you get upset..

i have one router, and 4 pc's no issues except my uploads.. i am at 15kbps or whatever, its massively lower than the downloads.. i anticipate your problems will arise in this area too, cause more comps playing online will eat the total upload up very quickly.

still, you need not despair, it is serviceable

LOL orph, I was thinking the exact same thing Officially or not, DSL will do for me (I hope), and at least its a damn site better than 56k.

I didn't set myself up, I was ... notifying lol. I only think it turns into a piss fest when others get 'angry' at what you've said, which is odd to say the least. Anyway, again, congratulations on the upgrade, now go download some torrents [addsig]

oh, i agree, and if things get to out of hand i will more than likely back you, but.. there are things people NEED to know, things that people SHOULD know, and things no one WANTS to know, some of our members cannot distinguish which is which..

Surely the diffinition of broadband is a connection with a significantly higher than normal bandwidth? Different countries have different deffinitions, in the UK, 512 kbit+ is boradband, but in korea, for example, it only counts as broadband if it is more than 2 Mbit. What is the reason for a 2 meg DSL connection not counting as broadband?

1 Mbit should have 256 Kbit upload. I think it's different for different providers though. What router are you using that has bandwidth throttling? Ours is pretty good but won't do that, I think we will set up a linux one running IPcop next year, but if there is an easier way, I'de like to hear it

I thought that good bandwidth sharing was the entire point of a router, otherwise what makes it different to a hub? I can't remember the make or model of the router (should arrive tomorrow), but we had to go for an 8 port one, of which the choices were limited. [addsig]

coodos mate Man im jealous of europeans. 32mbit connections, you insane bastards. I have 512kbps adsl. I usally download at 50kbps so its s**thouse, but s**ts on 56k so i aint complaining much..

A firewall and IP assigning.

In all actuality if you were going for sharing broadband speed a Network switch would be more useful, but a router does have that handy feature of you know, seeing the other computers on the network lol. (just like a hub). Anyway, this is probably more information then you wanted to know ... @ Orph.


By the way, I feel bad now because I have a 2.3 Mb connection.
I'd share my bandwidth if I could ....(and I technically am, with the people who live on my street). [addsig]

A router typically does nothing with bandwidth at all. The point of a router is to seperate two networks while allowing connectivity between them, in this case your home LAN and the interenet.

A basic router should allow you to forward specific ports to a specific private (192.168) IP, can act as a DHCP server, and may be able to make one of the private machines open to direct connections to the external internet (DMZ).

broadband.. DSL is not broadband in the sense of its limiting upload abilities.. you can get more upload by paying more for it, but it will always be significantly lower than the download.

routers are better than hubs, they can assign individual IP address, within the router network, from the outside though, you will all ave the same IP , so you will need to remember that if someone needs to join you..

routers are better.. period.

and crono, you deserved it cause.. knowing when, is a two way street, you should have known, someone would have given you a hard time.. that doesn't mean to shut up.. never works for me knowing, but that also means i deserve it most times as well

besides, if i can't poke fun at you, our relationship at snarkpit will be severely limited..

So it's not broadband because the upload bandwidth is less than the download bandwidth? We are on cable and our upload is 1/4 our download... does that mean we haven't got broadband?
