Secondly, steam is back up at the moment ...
Gorb, what was the error message it gave? (it would help if you posted it, I'd imagine.)
Also, their email service, as hard as it is to hear this, takes a LONG time. Like, wait a day or two. The reason why is that, they've undershot the use of Steam, I think. More people then they had planned are using everything all at once, and their servers aren't able to handle the load, now I don't know why on earth their Steam servers are the same as their web and email servers, but they seem to be. Such as, if Steam is down, so are the email and site servers. [addsig]

| First off. Comment on what steam can do to you in an immoral fasion isn't helping anyone. |
Well, it may not have helped the problem at hand, but it sure as hell made me feel better

| They should have made it an option, not mandatory. As well, from now on, any updates I would like, I can't get, because I play CS with bots on my comp until I get the internet at the end of the year. I don't mind bots, I'm using a special variant of the PODbot and the SWAT bot and they are fairly realistic. Anyway, I dont like the move to steam. Ever since, I've heard more bad then good. In fact, I have yet to hear any good come from it.

There's plenty, Think about it, there is only a small fraction of the HL community whining about steam overall. Everyone else is too busy playing games. Like all these problems other people have had, I've never experienced any of them, Things have gone wrong with steam, however my solution isn't re-installing it. That's a horrible solution by the way.
But then again no one is there to monitor your use of steam to tell you how to fix it.
Secondly, I think you should be forced to switch, I doubt that Valve still wants money they rightfully deserve for these products (Don't get your panties in a bunch) and if you use WON all they get is the money from the copy you bought, if you even bought it.
If they have more satisfied users using a product they made they get more development money. (To semi-simplify it.)
But it's up to you; however, I doubt you've ever used a good working version of steam. Believe me, its great. Obviously, if you don't like steam because you can't afford, or don't want, a faster connection that is a different argument. In which you wouldn't really be arguing that steam sucks, rather that it's unfair. Because that would be saying Deep Blue sucks, because you don't own it, when in all actuality it suck that you CAN'T own it. Does that make sense?
God, I'm just on a rambling spree today.
Oh, also, if you were wondering, there are plently of Bots for Steam based stuff as well.

No, this was a few days ago, and I've yet to receive anything. There is no error message that's the whole point. If there was I'd be able to do something about it. It just says that the email has been sent but it actually hasn't. It had nothing to do with it being down. It just acted like everything was swell, but didn't help me. |
I meant when you tried to log in. [addsig]

The whole point is I can't...it just doesn't see the password as correct.
I have a fast connection, and I still prefer WON. Why do you think Steam got installed in the first place?
[addsig]Posted by Wild Card on Tue Mar 23rd at 7:12pm 2004
Well, before Steam, I only played Counter-Strike. With the best (IMO) 1.5 version. And if I wanted to find a specific server, I would go to www.gametiger.com and look it up. Once I found it, I would go in console and connect to it. Either that or I would search the servers and just pick one inside CS. Either way, things worked fine for me. Never had any problems.
Why fix something if it aint br0ked?
With Steam, you cant use any new updates unless you have internet and a good connection (I have DSL so that part isnt a problem) But MY computer isnt on the internet. And I have just as much fun playing against bots. At least they dont cheat. But now with Steam, if ever there is a new update (a better one than 1.6 anyways) I cant get it.
As for this whole money thing I am slightly confused. There is no money involved in CS since you can download it for free on the internet. (unless you were on of those suckered into buying the retail version which you had to update anyways to play online)
Valve made money 6 years ago with Half-Life, Opposing Force, and Team Fortress. Again a few years ago with Blue Shift and the HD pack. Why would they want to make money for a 6 year old game that is played on the internet? IMO, if I understand correctly, they are looking for money in the wrong place.
But thats just me.
I might be wrong, and probably am.
But I still hold my opinion..
Steam can suck the left one!

Um, why are you worried about the most recent updates if you're not online? Its just to fix compatability and make the game smoother. If you're playing with bots, okay, fine, I don't really care.
By the way, they still make A LOT of money off of Half-Life, and the HL Platinum Pack stuff.
It works like a TV station, how do you think they get their money? Advertisements. Steam is the same sort of entertainment, granted I doubt they'd start full blown commercials or anything, but they do get more money for development with the more people that are using their product.
Also, just to point out, in steam, you can find any server you want. But obviously you can't play on you're favorite because it's on the WON network. Also, why change a good thing? They had no control over it, that's why. They wouldn't be able to do half of the things they're planning on the WON network, not to mention they would have to pay them more money the more used they would get for the server loads. I don't have a problem if you don't like steam for a specific reason (and there's a few), but like I said, it doesn't make sense to say something sucks if you're just un able to use it, because you honestly don't know. | Read my very first post. That IS the problem. It says the password has been mailed but my inbox stays empty. I did it once before (about a month or so ago.) but now it doesn't work.

I just went through the process that I described and it didn't email anything, it asked me to change my password, and then it went back to log in screen and asked me to log in with the new password .... I'm not sure what's going on with yours, but I'll help as much as I can. [addsig]

That part works just fine, I just don't get the email that it says it sent that has the code to give my new password. Without it I can't change my password or log in.

That's really odd, man. Maybe there was an update or something on this front. Because, earlier I changed my password by saying I forgot it and such and no emailing was even involved.
Also, same here Jeff, I've never had any problems like this, however I don't think formatting my HD or using Window's defrag is a good idea either. lol (Not accusing anyone else here of those crimes though.)
This has me riddled, seriously, and I wont leave it at "well mine works fine" because that doesn't help your situation. hmmm ... let me ponder this whine I play Raven Shield
