I just saw the remake of Romero's 1979 classic Dawn Of The Dead. It's easily one of the best horror movies since the original. The action is non-stop from the first 5 minutes, right through to the end credits, and it doesn't stop there. It was made with a budget of only 25,000,000, but easily beats other recent films in the genre like Resident Evil. In all departments, the plot; ambience; acting; zombies (They make the ones in Resident Evil look like slow moving practice targets); ect; are all superior. It was filmed not even 20km from where I live, in the abandoned thornhill mall slated for demolition. They took the mall which was little more than a concrete shell with all the ambience of a bus station and turned it into a fully functional suburban mecca, complete with dozens of fully stocked stores and a working fountain. Sarah Polley was amazing in her role, completely honest and believable. Ving Rhames really shines in his scene's with gun shop owner Andy who's trapped in his store across the street from the mall by a sea of undead. He also helps provide some comic relief with a hilariously gory game of shoot that celebrity look-a-like. Mekhi Phifer does a decent job, but my only qualm with the movie is his scene in which he goes off the deep end with his pregnant wife. It just didn't seem to flow with the rest of the movie. Tom Savini makes a cameo apperance as the county sheriff in one of the many morbidly hilarious scenes. All said and done, I think Zack Snyder did a brillant job of remaking the definitive zombie horror classic. I like the fact he opted for a new story and new set of characters instead of simply rehashing the old screenplay. I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars, for finally being able deliver what so many horror movies lately just failed to do, scare the s**t outta me. I would recommend this movie to any fan of the zombie/survival horror genre.

Just make sure to stay for the credits. Trust me on this.

And it was OK... I hate it when characters get stupid halfway through the movie though... I mean, come on, that younger black guy just turned into an IDIOT halfway through...

But thankfully the lead character was interesting, smart, funny... Overall worked for the part.

Good movie, I suppose. I like how they don't bother with details on how the zombies came to be- it makes it more real to me. I think it really does recreate the "oh s**t what's going on?" effect with the characters. Plus, I hate it when movies give some convulted storyline in order to justify itself. Half the time the story doesn't make a lick of logical sense, and only ends up degrading the movie as a whole. [addsig]

It's the actual ending of the movie...

You find out what happens to them. It's great.

A lot of people got up to leave, and I'm willing the bet that they will feel that somehow the movie just wasn't.... complete. But the credits do a nice job of wrapping things up. [addsig]

Hmm, don't think its really up my street but might see it once its on DVD or something. Now "Shaun of the Dead", I think that will get a cinema visit

28 days later was a great premise and could have been great, but it was poorly executed. Probably could have done with a bugger budget. [addsig]

it was shot using Digital, the whole thing, thats why it looks a bit lacking.
shaun of the dead looks good, saw the trailer a while back.

I liked 28 days later, because the focus didn't seem to be "Humans kicking the s**t outta zombies while trying to survive," and instead turned into "Humans kicking the s**t out of each other while zombies were around." It was a subtle little shift, but it really did change the whole theme of what would have been just another zombie flick. [addsig]
