Just saw the "I, Robot" trailer- looks like it's loosely based on Asimov's book rather than retelling it, but could be quite a good film (hopefully with some book magic working on it preventing it from being a mindless romp)

I saw the trailer for Harry Potter and the prisoner of Askaban yesturday when i went to see Scooby Doo 2 , its looks way better than the first 2, mabe because it is directed by someone different. [addsig]

books i would love to see made into movies.

2) anything Aurthur C. Clarke
3) the Shanarra series
4) anything Alan Dean Foster
5) anything Heinlein

7) more Marvel comics

I think a thriller such as "thriller" or something should have been used in place of horror - thriller could perhaps include horror, and it could also encompass books by people such as Grisham, Clancy, etc...

thriller duncan, you mean suspence?

is this a word across the pond issue?

when i watch movies, thriller doesn't come to mind, in fact i haven't even heard the word applied to a flick in years..

i have to ask this though, does snarkpit truly only have 27 readers among our membership? i would have thought the number much higher, considering our school age roster :/

I guess it must be, thriller seems to be a pretty common term to apply to films and books over here anyway, though suspence could certainly work too. I guess thriller kinda works as a genre as it includes anything that could be construed as thrilling, which is anything that is mainly about a threat to the main characters. [addsig]

well, i do understand the term thriller, i just have not applied it to a movie in a while..

i just finished "runaway jury" recently.. that would be a suspence/drama IMO.. "phonebooth" would be a thriller..

is this what you mean?

Science fiction - The Culture series by Iain M. Banks is superb, and the best sci-fi I've read by several parsecs. Please, PLEASE read them.

Fantasy - The Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake with Lord of the Rings a remote second. Most of the rest is derivative drivel.

I voted for 'other', though.

The Flashman papers by George Macdonald Frazer - The Aubrey/Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian - Anything by P.G.Wodehouse or Charles Dickens

My all-time favourite is "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte (I'm not gay, honest) with "The Code of the Woosters" by P.G.Wodehouse breathing over her shoulder.

hmmm, i am about as un-gay as it can get, and i loved this story as well.. what would make one assume gay-ism with this title?

hell i already admitted that i loved the little house series, thats just about as pansy as one could possibly get

seriously though, how can a books genre be considered... gay?

i love reading so much, that i would consider it sacrilegious to harm one in any way.. i would never even entertain the idea, even if it were a book i would consider tripe/drivel or just plain s**t.. it is still a book and should be considered sacred.

It was said tongue in cheek, really. It's a love story and considered by most to be a "Woman's book". Apologies to anyone offended.

Ditto the above, but much of the rubbish that's churned out should have never made it into print in the first place and certainly not worth killing trees for.

Granted Misery is alright. But Desperation ... come on. That book is about 300 pages longer then it should have been, simply because it's boring as hell, not to mention he just re-wrote one of his old stories: The Regulators. That was crap too. In fact, short of The Shining, Misery, Insomnia, and a few others he has no basis for being a good writer, and if you don't agree with that you can certainly agree he can't come up with anything new. There's plently of avenues he hasn't explored in his writing. A few years ago he just started mixing his stories up to make new ones *cough*Desperation*cough*. [addsig]

How can you call King a boring writer? If you're looking for a great deal of active horror story telling, read Koontz or something- King isn't trying to write that kind of story. He's writing it from a more psychological point of view- the effect of grotesque things on the minds of the characters. And for that effect, he hits it right on the head. [addsig]

Not really, just the things that were recommended by people's opinions I trust. Most of his books I've started and never finished, because they were crap. There's only a handful out of many that are actually good or at least entertaining.

Monqui, I'm saying he's boring in that he takes no risks as a writer. He writes only what he knows, which is boring. Even given the themes of his writing, psychological struture of the characters, he delivers poor plot and dialog. I never said his characters were bad, but I've seen them again and again, they get very old.

Personally I don't see the point in writing unless you have something to say. It seems King hasn't had anything to say for the last decade. But this is just my opion, likewise there is no possible way you can make me think any differently. I think he's a terrible writer now.

Maybe this will help. Have you ever seen a play with actors who have performed that play numerous times (as in a nationwide performance). Basically they have their performances down to a T. But ... when they do that, they lose something. You can tell that they're waiting for the other actor(s) to finish their lines so they can say theirs and the play can move on. King in the same light does this with his writing, and its painfully obvious. [addsig]
