Ok, Im on my computer when a MSN chat window pops up. So I start talking. All normal right? Theres just 1 little, tiny, minor problem...

IM NOT LOGED IN TO MSN!!!

To further my point, MSN is no longer installed in the computer. Its not in add/remove nor are there any folders left on the hard drive. No start menu short cuts or anything of the sort. Not even a system tray icon.

Now this causes a major problem. As soon as the computer boots up I am somehow loged into MSN, so while Im at school and my parents decide to go online, they get flooded with MSN convo windows. Also, if I log in on another computer, after a few minutes I get loged out and receive this message: "You have loged in at another location, click here to log back in"

Damnit this is depressing... and f**king hillarious too

Remove MSN from the startup script majigger in Windows using msconfig. Then go get a decent chat program. [addsig]

This is some BS thing that Windows Messenger does now, it just logs in automatically without having a task-bar icon. And no, you can't disable it from startup no matter how hard you try, it just starts anyway, msconfig, preferences, regedit, nothing. It just starts. I just deleted the f**ker. MSN does what I want, Window Messenger does not. [addsig]

at least in my case , you are mistaken bud.

true, it does come on automatically sometimes, but its because when i check my email, i accidentally click the box, keep me logged in or some such.. i am used to doing it with snarkpit and prefabland, and sometimes out of habit i do it with MSN.. the next time i reboot, messenger is on..

use msconfig to disable it, and it will disable.

If you have XP/2K, you need to get msconfig from the microsoft website. Probably easier to use google to find it than the actual microsoft download search though. It's normally then the first item in the startup list (obviously messenger is the most important thing ever!!).

XP pro should already have it, but if not you can get it here

er, what? msconfig is in XP home and pro.

I'm not talking MSN Messenger, I'm talking Windows Messenger (they are both quite different believe it or not) AND it's not the services messenger either. It's only seemed to do this with more recent updates/possibly SP1.

yup thats what I would say. Windows and msn messenger look the same, but are different. [addsig]

i've not been able to get the windows messenger icon out of my systems tray since i installed xp on a new hd. when i right click on it and select exit, i get a pop-up listing some applications that i could be using that are stopping messenger from closing. none of the apps are running

Which is why you remove the entire thing. It's just junk.

Want to remove it easily? Be forewarned this is permanent, but it won't be popping up anytime soon, and MSN is loads better anyway. This is enabled from SP1, information from http://dotnetjunkies.com/WebLog/darrell.norton/archive/2004/03/10/8781.aspx

1) Click Start
2) Click Run
3) Type the following line in the box:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Virus scanning programs keep your Messenger programs nice and busy.

Also, I'm not sure, but have you ever checked in Add/Remove programs under "Windows Applications" or some such crap. It might be under that, since Messenger is installed with Windows. I mean, I bet you can remove it since you can remove Internet Explorer (just the browser of course). But I don't know if it's actually in there, it's just a guess. [addsig]

That doesn't fully work, I've tried that previously...if you want to get rid of it quickly just do the run command I stated above. I've used it, it works. (granted you have Service Pack 1) [addsig]
