And I'm a snark spawn... but I don't want to be. This has motivated me to make maps that aren't s**tty and perhaps even good. Either that or just make a billion killboxes.

it is a proven fact, that map quality and high snarkmarks do not necessarily coincide.

there is/are some members with substantially high marks, whom make extraordinarily poor maps.

good luck with the killboxes, has worked before

*blushes*

yes, i do have a person in mind, but.. seriously though, putting that aside.. look at the stats on maps most downloaded.. 2 of those maps are... well downloaded alot..

i however hesitate to call them substandard maps.. but i can say honestly, we have many maps of higher quality..

*smiles at yak*

you, my friend, know me far to well

And because of perhaps the morality/social suicide (yes, I know this is largely a mapping community), Gorbachev?

It just makes it easier.

There are people with relatively low snarkmarks or ratings who I think are great mappers, while others have high snarkmarks and high rating but give me a prefabland impression. (Not to say all prefabs are bad...but the junk I've seen there makes me want to cry.)

ok, first off, no offence taken

secondly, i am saddened by the amount of crap at PFL, but also quite proud that we do not filter it out either.. i don't think i could respect a site, that says, "no n00b's allowed"

seriously though, if i find bogus fabs i remove them, but cannot bring myself to police the bad ones away.. if i did that, all but one of mine would be missing

I can't find my snark label thing? Also, it says I have made more posts than I have snarkmarks, so does this mean I have done something bad to get marks taken away? Or do you not get a mark per post?

You are a scabby old HL1 snark - you can find it at the bottom of the left hand side bar on your profile. You don't get a snarkmark per post, though your posts are used in the calculation. If you search the forums you might be able to find the fomula used to determine your snarkmarks, though I think Lep may have changed it quite a bit since then. [addsig]

we (some of us whom recommend suggestions) hashed out the value of posts vs. snarkmarks a while back jeff, and it was decided that posts were over rated at 1 per 1, its now something like 5 or 10 posts per snarkmark.

everyones marks decreased back then, and was in no way reflective of any harm incurred..

you musta slept since then to have missed it, cause everyone cried about their number decrease.

personally it is my opinion that snarkmarks should only reflect solid contributions to the pit..

1) maps
2) tutorials
3) questions solved
4) reviews
5) critiques (yeah it is my opinion that critiques are more valuable than reviews)
6) ect,ect,ect

never random posts totals

I never noticed because I never cared about how many points I had got... I only saw now because I was interested in what 'rank' I had 'achieved' I say let posts count to marks, it's not as if the marks get you money or a free luxury holiday!

/me hopes to be corrected on that

I agree with that last bit wholeheartadly...

EDIT: This was in reply to orph's post!

/me glares at Wild Card

Seriously though, if the snarkmarks per post ratio is really low, then it does no harm really. Tutorials, reviews, critiques (perhaps map author rateable, so great big critiques get more snarkmarks for the writer than a couple of bug reports), maps, and editing help should certainly make up the bulk of the score. *resists urge to get the big head*

i agree duncan.. critiques are not as simple as people think, the process can be daunting, why else are there so damned few done???

i don't wanna over rate them either, but i do think them of a higher value than reviews, only because it helps create better maps, reviews are only done when its complete..

i await being corrected as well

Critiques affect the map, reviews critisize... therefore critiques are more useful to the mapper, but reviews are useful to 56k users because they want to know wether the map is worth waiting 10 mins to download [addsig]

I always aim my reviews primarily at the potential player (as well as pointers for the author) - a critique is more or less purely for the author of the map.

I dunno, I guess it just doesnt make sense to compare them..
