Could somebody tell me of a shortcut/program that disconnects you from the internet, say when a dialer tries to dial you to up some premium rate server? I'm having problems at the moment with them, (I havn't been going on any dodgey sites, except this one of course) and except for taking the phone line out, its really bugging me.

Any help gratefully recieved.

i have absolutely no idea what you just said..

but i suggest.. you uncheck the box that says "auto connect" perhaps..

been ages since i had dial-up though.

maybe if you rethink this, and type a bit more coherently? cause i am really confused.

you are not using some crappy AOL account are you?

What OS? In Win98 you can CTRL+ALT+DELETE rnaap.exe which will disconnect you. Otherwise, you might want to sort out the actual problem, instead of trying to fix it this dumb way...

my parents have dial-up, and winXP..

whenever they are online, an icon is in the sys tray/taskbar.. right click on it and disconnect..

Dumb? This is the only way I can consieve of solving this problem, and the stupid things always disconnect me from freeserve first, so i can't do it in the taskbar.

How about you conceive the idea of stopping whatever program it is that is trying to dial up these premium rate numbers? lol and if you're insinuating I've somehow decreased your snarkmarks, I have better things to do than mark down people for asking questions on my website

This is a dum way to 'fix' it. Try removing the stupid program that is trying to dial a different connection? Find out what program is causing this to happen, and delete it or change it's settings. You could do this by watching the task manager when online, and seeing what new process starts using the CPU when you get disconnected, and the new dialer opens. There is definately nothing you can do about it unless you find out what program is doing this.

Once you have an exe name, go to google and search for it - if it's a virus, the first result will probably be a link that tells you about the virus and how to remove it. You can't stop something when you don't know what it is.

Look, I know I post alot, and I hardley ever start posts or 'spam' I'm not suggesting that anyones got vendetas against me, put please, I'm don't really give a s**t how many 'snarkmarks' I have. Please, delete them all for all i care. Anyway, as I've had such a negative response from starting one post, I'll find the solution elsewhere.

If you want, but the route to solving your problem has already been said/suggested 3 times here... I said your idea of getting something to disconnect a dial-up was dumb, because it's the age-old fallacy of failing to attack the cause of something. Like being concerned about ants infesting your house and just squashing them when you see them in your kitchen, instead of going after the nest or cleaning the place up

You could use a software firewall like ZoneAlarm (there's a free version) that will display which programs are trying to access the net and block them. It'll catch outbound programs but won't catch droppers auto-installing like the one you've got.

Install all of the security updates from the Windows site, otherwise people could take advantage of security holes.
