I'm not implementing that my idea is better than yak's. I'm not sure if our "big rooms" can be compared, since mine our completely different from his...

His room is designed so HL doesn't draw all of the room at the same time. Maybe. That's only , I guess, about 75 - 50 percent of the entire room (just a guess : )

My rooms however, have nothing in them that stops HL from drawing all of the room at one time. I would need a two screenshots to show you what the size of rooms are...

I'll go upload them into my profile smiley just sec.

read this, read your own words..
you just described design..

if you have the concept at least this well understood, how could you knowingly design it otherwise?

look bud, i am not trying to tell you what kind of map to make, i am just attempting to forestall any possible hurts.

if your map exceeds 1000, we will not overlook it.. we will tell you how it could have been made otherwise.

its up to you to decide how much criticism you can take.. its NOT up to us to curve our criticism to suit you (you as in any mapper)

Great words, i like the idea that your critisism is proper, i.e. dosen't worry that the mapper may go away and sulk in the corner if u give it a lot of critisism.

Will there be proper reviews on the maps entered?

This is going to sound like a dim question/already answered, but I can't be bothered to search through 14 pages of posts to find the answer: are extra resources such as sprites allowed in this comp? I've only just started looking at this competition, and I'm thinking of looking at doing a jungle map, but I need a quick way for (flatshaded) leaves and sprites seem to be the answer (or at least for the way I want to do it). Allowed or not?

As far as I know, you allowed to put custom sprites, models, textures, etc, whatever you need/want in your map

~takes notice of locos signature~

btw (learn new terms every day ), Orph, I can know all I want to about mapping and glitches and erros, and it is good to map inside those boundaries, however, my imagination has the tendacy to get the better of me in mapping situations. I usually obey my imagination, and worry about rules later until problems actually arise.

you want to talk about big areas with?

http://ferret.hl-nightwatch.net/gamedesign.php?map=ps_splinter

that map has some of the largest areas I've seen in halflife. Its done right, wpoly is kept within limits. Areas are open and nice looking. Buildings are enterable. Gameplay is wonderful. Texturing is nice, lighting is nice. THe map is awesome. ANd yet I had limitations and design in mind while creating it. Thus I was able to obtain a wonderful MP level without worrying about it lagging computers and with it reaching well under 900 wpoly in ALL areas.

Talk about blowing your own trumpet I'm just jesting though mate, its nice to see somebody who is proud of their work, most of us seem to put our own work down at every opportunity.

some of us, are justified in doing so.

others, should be so humble.

others still.... have no clue how aweful their maps truly are.

I agree to an extent orph, but there is a difference between arrogance and pride, and unfortunately there are quite a lot of people who either don't know this, or are afraid to tread the thin line between them.

i detect some confusion on your part duncan..

i was not in any way refering to master ferret..

i think, if you were to dwell on it a bit, you could indeed apply names to all of my words i posted.. starting with mine :/

I didn't think you were referring to Ferret, I just thought you were sort of generalising how all mappers should be, but I guess I was wrong. Regardless, I'll put in a few other cases...

Some people are justified in being proud of their work.

Others, should take more pride in it. (you )

Others still.... have no clue how awful their maps truly are

IMO, pride is over-rated,but.. if i had to define its origins.. i would say it comes from others, not from within.

i fail to see my own works in any proper light.. so i am told.

i do however acknowledge that some peoples works, are over-looked somehow.. usually for no clearly defined reason.

i personally value a n00b who has given 100% much higher than a (insert year number of choice) year vet, who is also giving 100%, simply because its much harder to do it at n00b level.

thats not to say, i look at maps that are "" and say "nyah, he's been at it 4 years, no biggie" .. true greatness has no time limit.

anyways.. i seem to view mapping, and mappers differently than most.. prolly directly due to my extensive time spent critiquing peoples work..

who knows

It might be wise to check my profile to see this room. The open areas Ferret showed, still aren't quite what I'm making... (r_speeds not shown because I wasn't in developer mode)

Im at a loss as to what room you are referring to.

Reno I am proud of that map its like 99% on all limitations and it takes up the whole WC grid! It plays beautifuly on full servers and I think its pretty nice to look at! But it is definately not the best map out there you sir are charged with that one looking at YOUR maps.

I'm proud of most of my work too but no way could any of them be classed as the best maps out there! Thanks for the compliment though

someday, we need to look thru our own membership, and each of us vote on our top 10 favorite maps..

after its done, we talley the averages and post a final list of snarkpits 10 top maps..

i think that would be a cool contest in and of itself..

opinions?

It would have to be re tallied every month or so... New maps (and possibly better ones) would be introduced. [addsig]
