But having seen pictures of FarCry, these suddenly don't look so amazing tbh...
^^ FarCry on the next ATI graphics card.

God you guys! You love HL so blindly you don't realise the truth. HL2 is dissapointing, its bog standard graphics. Released in september it would have blown the world away, but please, Stalker...
Stalker has an advanced weather engine, and it looks good, HL2 doesn't even cast shadows from { textures ffs! Look at the fences, no shadows. The graphics are just as good as Splinter Cell lol!
If you wanna see a good game I advise you try and find out more about the game Gearbox are anouncing... they released 5 screenshots of oh so goodness. When they were loading I thought they were photos!

| I'm pretty sure it'll run on a DX8 card WC. |
It might.. but the MX cards dont have pixel shaders so I dont know. The card didnt let me run DX2 sooo... unno. Time will tell.

So? How many of the features really *need* Pixel Shaders?

Not features fraggy... the game itself. Is why MX's wont run DX2. But I can only guess for HL2. So as I said, we'll have to wait t'ill the system requirements are released. As they will say what cards are not supported.

| In the right settings, the Doom3 engine looks absolutely fantastic - those settings happen to be that sleek futuristic style the game is set in. Far Cry is another great looking game, and it does a great job mixing the two types of environments while not looking horrible, which tends to happen when you try to use excessive bump/normal maps and specular highlights on semi-realistic stuff.
It's funny, you look at the comments on these shots on blues or the shack and it's full of Far Cry fanboys saying how horrible it looks and blah blah etc. etc. - you know, the usual . But these shots look absolutely fantastic to me. Not because every pixel is the best pixel ever in a game, but because the entire environment is just so wonderfully stylized and well constructed. The entire game just oozes of a style all to itself, which (graphically) is a huge draw for me. I don't want to see 18000000.3 engines that all look the same, I want to see different interpretations of graphical flair and stylistic control, and that is what HL2 offers. It's not realistic by any stretch, but it doesn't feel fake. There's some word that I can't quite grasp that describes the artistic style here, and in my mind, that is a very good thing |
