It's been awhile sence I have tried to play halflife online. I ususally play with coworkers accross the LAN line. We have a ton of maps that we have added. Last night I tried to join an online game. Every game I selected gave me an error "Unable to connect to server using a different protocol". Does anyone know what this means and how do I fix it so I can play online again. Thank you in advance.

Maybe some of your Co-Workers updated to a newer version (so they're running a different protocol.) Make sure you all have the s?me version installed. (or download steam, but with all those computers ... could be a bandwidth monster for a couple of hours)

Yeah just sounds like you need the latest patch or steam. How long has it been since you last played online?

http://www.steampowered.com

That's the steam website.

I for one would not recommend Steam for LAN play for a multitude of reasons. Just download 1.1.1.0 (try Fileplanet or somewhere), make sure every machine has the same patch, check your network protocols too and everything should be fine and dandy.

Thanks guys. We are all on the latest update and patch. The thing I question is some of the maps we added have several other files (other than a bsp) that were put in our gearbox folder.

I will give steam a try this afternoon.

How do I check network protocols?

Sorry I'm trying to keep up.

It's been about a year sence I last played on line. Normaly we have enough people in the office to have a good game on the LAN line. Unfortunatly the server melted down two weeks ago. Our IT guy said he won't get to reinstalling halflife for another week or so (priorities go figure). So some of us are jonesing to kill each other. We would like to all jump into an online game and have at.

Maps sometimes come with custom sounds, skies and textures nothing to worry about.

LYAL_C: Can you post the exact error message you're getting when you try to connect? Also, when exactly does this message come up?

when I pull up a list of games, select one, and then hit join game a green box appears with the message "unable to connect to server using a different protocol" We have tried several games and get the same error.

If you're trying to play CS I think this is a known problem with running CS1.4 and connecting to it/from it to a CS 1.5 machine. Like everyone else said, you might want to make sure that they're all the same version.

I doubt this is a network problem though, since you can get the list of games.

*Edit: I'm stupid. I somehow assumed you meant LAN game. Anyway, I suppose this could also happen if you're running through a firewall.

We are trying to play halflife. Normaly we stick to just us on the LAN line. But with that not being an option right now, we are each trying to get into an online game. We checked the fire wall and that is not the problem. We are unsure of how to check or chance the protocol and what is the correct one for internet play.

Thanks

We just found that we have a mod called gmdm2 in our files. Do you think this may be the problem. And if so how do we get rid of it.

ROFL Yeah just delete that pile of crap

Seriously though, if you are just playing normal HL, other mods shouldn't effect it, so there is no need to delete any mods. And gmdm2 rocks...if you'll excuse the pun [addsig]

Does the mod affect the protocol?

And will deleting all gmdm2 files remove it or are there other hidden factors I need to be aware of.

Thanks for the help guys

No, it will not. Don't delete GMDM2, Reno was being sarcastic.

If I got the connection error you're having my first thought would be that I have to get a new patch. If you're connecting online and getting this I would think you are either trying to connect to steam games without having steam installed or connecting to a steam game without updating it to the newest patches.

any time i play online now, it's through steam. i still have the old install that can access WON servers, but there are an awful lot of them that refuse to let me connect because i'm not on the same lan as them. i was thinking that it might be some of these servers you've been trying to connect to, and there network protocols are different from the network you are on. but i know squat about networking though, so i'm probably talking s**t.

why dont you or one of your colleagues run a listenserver, and play that way until your IT guy gets it setup on the server?

Thank you everyoen for your help.

Next question: where can we get a linex server program for half-life and opposing force with the latest updates.

Thanks again.

I guess the working enviroment has been taking over by the power of Half-Life, now....no more work will be done ever!

+ The problem could be because the list doesn't filter out Steam servers
And that would mean you'd be connecting to a Steam server with HL 1.1.1.0 or vice versa. You should also make sure that all of the Half-Life installations have their own CD-key because if not, it will cause conflicts over internet.

So:
1. make sure you all have patched up to 1.1.1.0 (and the latest version of whatever mod you're trying to play)
2. Make sure you join a 1.1.1.0 server and not a Steam server: Get All Seeing Eye, it's a perfect online server filter: http://www.udpsoft.com/eye2/index.html
