There's a large possibility that I'll be getting a GameCube to accompany my old and frail PS2 within the coming weeks. Now I'm not that familiar with what is avilable for the GC, so I'm going to ask you lot what I should get for it as well. I won't be getting all of thse games instantly, I'll be buying them over a period of time, so post as many as you want. I don't want mediocre games, I want the best of the best. Here is what I've come up with so far:

Beyond Good And Evil (I'll save you the trouble of pimping it again KFS )
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Soul Calibur 2
Legend Of Zelda [addsig]

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - I love the cel-shaded style of this, and the island exploration is cool. I've not actually played the game to be honest, but I watched my flatmate play through it and it seems like a great game, certainly one of the must buys on the console.

Viewtiful Joe - Seemed cool, though very hard, but my flatmate traded it in before I really got to play it.

Harvest Moon - Slow paced game but seems like fun to me. If raising a successful farm sounds like fun to you, go for it

Resident Evil - Great remake, that is really more different to the original game than it is comparable. If you like the series this is WELL worth picking up, even if you played the first game to death.

Resident Evil Zero - A novel character switching system adds quite nicely to the typical res evil gameplay, though doesn't really change anything much. If you like the series, again this is worth getting, but it won't change your opinion of it if you never liked the others.

Mario Kart Double Dash - Absolute blast in 4 player mode, so if you play multiplayers with mates often, this is an absolute essential. I haven't played it in single player though, doubt it would be worthwhile if thats what you mostly use the console for.

Super Smash Bros Melee - Again, a great multiplayer title that doesn't hold so much appeal in single player. Not perfect but a good laugh and anyone can play it, so great at parties or with a group of mates or whatever.

I'm having a bit of trouble thinking of others really, those are the games my mate has that are worth getting.

I personally have:

Zelda: Wind Waker
Smash Bros. Melee
Animal Crossing
Zelda: Ocarina of Time Collector's Disc
Zelda: Collector's Disc
Resident Evil
Metroid Prime

I might have a few more, I'm not in the same room as the games so that's off the top of my head.

I'd also highly recommend Twin Snakes. As well as all the ones I have.

I have approximately one s**tload of games for the GC and I loves them
all. MAKE SURE YOU BUY SMASH BROS. MELEE! Also be sure to
check out:

Metroid Prime (first-person shooter/adventure with a pretty immersive story)
Burnout 2 (arcade racing and CRASH MODE)
Resident Evil (if you're into this sort of game, or...)
Eternal Darkness (another great survival horror, where you can go insane)
Metal Arms (BUY THIS GAME RIGHT NOW, YOU WON'T REGRET IT - GREAT platformer for $20!)
F-Zero GX or Mario Kart (depends on which sort of racing you like - I think they're both good)
Animal Crossing (It's like Harvest Moon but better - play with your girlfriend/wife, she'll love it)

You might also like Smuggler's Run, Mario Tennis/Mario Kart, I Ninja...

And be on the lookout for upcoming games: Metroid Prime 2, Paper Mario
2, Fire Emblem, The Legend of Zelda, and especially Tales of Symphonia.

Personally I have found the GC to be my favorite system of the bunch. Sure, it doesn't get online, but the games it has are tons of fun, the console is dirt cheap, and the fact that most people dismiss it means lots of cheap used games for me!

I also vouch for Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness - I've played neither but my flatmate loved them both.

EDIT: Oh and Pikmin, again I've barely played it, but from watching my mates play it looks really good, and they recommend it.

The only Gamecube games I can suggest as great games are Animal Crossing and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Every other big name game like Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, Zelda:Windwaker, and Mario Kart DD is inferior to its SNES or N64 counterpart.

DO NOT BUY THE WIND WAKER AHHH!

- Worst graphics and worst graphical style of any Zelda game; Ocarina and Majora look better

- Insult to the intricate and involving storyline to older Zelda titles; with about a sentence of explanation, Link is in an entirely different world with people he does not know, fighting Gannondorf - who, by the way, has turned into a fat Japanese warlord of sorts.

- Intolerable stupidity in theme; your friends are talking boats and kids with snot trailing feet below their noses (And yes, that is f**king disgusting) and your enemies are pigs with additive-fade lamps that can't see two feet in front of them.

Shame on Nintendo for releasing this piece of absolute garbage. It's only by the new Zelda videos, whose beauty and genius brought a tear to my eye (not literally) that my faith has been restored in them after playing this 'game' the Wind Waker.

I agree with cass, zelda on gamecube = bleuch, the n64 and SNES versions were far better. The SNES origional is just genious, even today compared with all of the ruubish most software developer dish out each year.

The graphics in the wind waker are great for its style - if you don't like the style, then fair enough, but the graphics aren't bad, and are certainly better than those found in Ocarina (not played Majora's Mask, but its the same engine right?).

As for your second point cass - early Zelda games had such deep and compelling storylines didn't they You don't play as Link in the wind waker, you play as a young boy who is dressed up like Link because its his birthday, and thats their tradition. Its not an entirely different world, its suggested that its the same world but flooded, due to the fact you can visit Hyrule castle. From what I saw of WW it was far more story centric than other Zelda's.

I actually found the setting to be far more interesting than prior Zelda's - wow it has pigs to fight instead of what, big rats? Big deal. There are plenty of other more interesting enemies anyway, such as the knights, who you can knock different parts of the armour off and steal their swords. The snot-nosed kid is really annoying, but other characters are pretty cool, be it the talking fish, travelling boat shop guy, or your own damn cool looking lion boat.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time in case you haven't played it on X-Box / PS2 / PC already. Really fluid animations and one of the first games to have that desaturated-dreamy look. Also some great level design as well. [addsig]

Dammit, I thought I could still sneak PoP in there until I got to the bottom... all my suggestions have been used up.

I'll go ahead and re-inforce recommendations for Prince of Persia, Mario Kart, and Viewtiful Joe. I have Eternal Darkness but haven't played it that much yet.

oh, and... BG&E? Double pimp! Gamecube version won't look quite as good as the Xbox or PC versions, but the control scheme is by far the best of the console versions.

I think the new 1019 (or so)_ block memory card comes out this week, so hold off for that - I need to snag one of those as soon as they hit shelves, since my 251 is getting pretty full. [addsig]

I recommend Wind Waker. I don't recommend Mario Sunshine though, I have it and it's just pathetic. Think 10% of the goodness of Mario 64 with nice looking water and you pretty much have it. [addsig]

the original wasn't the SNES one; there were 2 before it on NES.

I thought Mario Sunshine was great, much better then Mario 64 on many aspects.

Ikaruga (how could you guys miss this one??)
Super Mario Sunshine (rent it and judge for your self)
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Soul Calibur 2 (best of the three versions)
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, don't bother getting the other collectors pack, it just has OoT and Zelda 1,2, and the Links Awakening. Masters Quest is pretty awesome.
Metroid Prime (alright ... I expected a little more, but it's a good game)
Viewtiful Joe (rent this one first, because it's not too long, but it's for a true gamer, but its bad ass.)
Windwaker, if you like Zelda in general, because it's not a bad game, I'm sick of hearing people say the game is crap just because they don't like cell shading.

Anything you can find on GC and PC I'd suggest getting them on PC, simply because it'll look better and run faster there. [addsig]

hmmm..... GC games. i have always found there to be my faverates <---- spelt rong:

Baulders Gate-Dark Alliance: A fantastic game, not brilliant compared to other slash and hacks ( lotr rotk ) but alot of fun to play on. The same people that made icewind dale

Super Smash0 Bro's: Great fun for 2 or more people. One of my most played games ( at my mates [ I have no GC ] ).
Can be very diffecault if you choose it to be.

Metroid Prime: Great to play. even better if you play all the other metroids ( Metroid, Super Metroid, Metroid fusion, Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Prime ) takes i wile to get used to but is werth it.

alot of people seem to like the Flatshaded Zelda. i thought it was realy poor but the mejority seem to like it. alot more skill involved

Lotr Rotk ( Lord of the Rings - Return of the King ):
An apsalutely great game. Alot of fun and lets you see some bits you dont see in the film !!! ) ( only small shots though )
I found this slightly better on the pc version, it seemed to have a better quality and better speed than the GC version. Still alot of fun to play. [addsig]

Gah! My new addiction, of all things!!!

After having this game for a few months, I finally sat down and figured out how to play it. Holy hell. Amazing.

And while you're at it, find the video of a single guy playing 2-player with two controllers (one for each hand) in chapters 3 and 5. Un-freakin-believable. [addsig]

If he has that much spare time, I'll bet he definately is single.
