Maybe I got it confused with some other famous guitarist or something. Would love to see Van Halen play live, that would be legendary! Oh, and I know who the members are :P

Did you also know that Eddie was originally a drummer, but his brother Alex kept going on his kit and playing it, and eventually Eddie learnt that his brother was in fact better than him, so he learnt guitar. Legend- invented double hand finger tapping.

actually, two-hand legatto style playing has been around for centuries myrk....eddie just helped make it popular in rock circles.... <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_wink.gif"> ever hear of a cat named stanley jordan?... the epitomy of leggato....

excerpt from his website....

Stanley Jordan
Multifaceted Musician

TRYING TO DESCRIBE STANLEY JORDAN IN SIMPLE TERMS is like trying to explain Einstein's Theory of Relativity in ten words or less. No matter what you say, you'd be leaving a lot out. And yet, that is probably what you've already done if you haven't heard the whole story. Best known as a guitarist who has made major technical and musical contributions to his instrument, Stanley Jordan has already made a name for himself as one of the most significant guitarists of the latter 20th century. After seeing him perform with his trio at the Montreal Jazz Festival, Los Angeles Times jazz critic Leonard Feather was prompted to write, ?Genius is a word too often tossed around in musical circles, but it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan.?

The Technique
Stanley uses a technique called the ?Touch? or ?Tapping? technique to achieve a level of orchestral complexity equaling that of a keyboard instrument. He can sound like two or three guitarists at the same time with no overdubs or other studio techniques. He says, ?Basically, I use 'hammer-ons' and 'pull-offs.' These techniques have been around for a long time.? But Stanley Jordan has raised this art to an unprecedented musical level, and has used it to express his unique musical vision. Other players, such as Jimmy Webster, Lenny Breau, Edward Van Halen and Emmett Chapman have also used the technique, but Stanley Jordan discovered and developed it independently, and today he is widely regarded as the first ?Touch Virtuoso.? He also uses traditional flat-picking and finger picking. A good example is ?When Julia Smiles? from the album Flying Home. Much of the attention surrounding his sudden rise to fame in the mid 80s was based on his technique. Because the technique is so startling, so strikingly unusual, it is easy to see how it can make a dominating first impression. But what has become more and more clear through the years, is that he has the musicianship and creativity to match. His music is embued with a combination of passion, sensitivity, humor and shear brilliance. His technique never overwhelms his music. In fact, he says that since the early 80s he has been focusing much more on expressiveness than on speed and complexity. Could it be then, that many of his listeners still have not heard the full range of his abilities? Certainly what they have heard has made his live concerts legendary.

Crazy... I wish I was my age now in 1978... I could have easily pioneered something- the amount of crazy shizzle I try and do, and all before I heard other people doing it. Thats why I love Van Halen and IA, all seem to do exactly what I always wanted to do, before I had heard of them or anything- as if they were me in 15 years or something <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_eek.gif">

Just picked up By The Way by the Chili Peppers. Excelent stuff. Combine Frusciante's crazy riffs with bass god Flea and awesome lyrics from Kiedis... man. What a great band.

Anyhoo, I'm almost done my Zep collection, with only Coda left, but I couldn't find that at HMV today. So I've started on my Chili Peppers collection. 1 down, 7 albums to go.

Go go go "Mother's Milk" - probably my favourite Chili's album. Not much else lives up to the song "Subway to Venus" <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> Dunno what you are on about with "awesome lyrics" though, as most of theirs is utter bulls**t that means absoutely nothing

Their more recent stuff has great lyrics. Songs like Californication and Under the Bridge all have meanings if you know the story of Anthony's life. I read his autobiography, and after I've made connections with the songs that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Under the Bridge (not really "recent" to be honest - it was on Blood Sugar Sex Magic) and Californication (and obviously a few others) are the exceptions though. Most of their stuff is competely random and used only because it rhymes <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

Since were on the topic of Lyrics... The a few wordsmiths that I really enjoy:

Ani Difranco: that girl knows how to put a song together.

Beck: surrealism at its best

Jack Johnson: Lots of soul and subtely inventive wordplay

Eminem: The kid raps like a damn Samauri

I've been buying music off Itunes music store like crazy lately. It's amazing how easy it is to spend $0.99 for something good.. and how quickly that adds up! I've been on some kind of musical kick, lately, listening to everything from Beethoven to Stevie Ray Vaughan to bluegrass to Snoop Dog. I'm actually quite amazed at how large my musical pallette has grown in the past 32 years. There was a time when all I would listen to was Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden..etc. Now, I can connect to almost any music as long as it has heart.

If you want a kickass Chilli Peppers song, try "Without You" by Van Halen- thats like Chillis but better and kickass guitar, trust my judgement!

I'll check it out Myrk-.

And Reno, I realize that's not recent, I didn't really think out my post. What I meant to say was that their early stuff from the 80's has more random lyrics because they were just trying to put out music to get big, but now they have a little more creative freedom, and he's grown and puts more thought into lyrics. But yeah, there are a lot of random ditty's... but they have the coolest groove.

One of my favourite Chili Peppers songs is Throw Away Your Television... it's awesome.

Hopefully their new album will have some more sweet songs... ahh who am I kidding, it will.

I really like what I've listened to so far, specifically "Under Control" and "The End Has No End".

Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism

I really like "Title and Registration" and "Sound of Settling".

I've been listening to The Wind Cries Mary by Jimi Hendrix loop for some time now. I don't know what it is about it, but it really hits the right spot with me. It's one of those songs where every note is perfect, and nothing could make it better.

My favorite song by him is All Along the Watchtower. Also, the first minute or two of Machine Gun is pretty amazing.

Been listening to a crazy Japanese band called "ORANGE RANGE" recently. They play...well I have no idea what you would call it to be honest, but it's fun music. Sort of pop/rocky I guess, very upbeat (normally), with somewhat rap style vocals from 3 or 4 seperate vocalists switching in and out all the time. Their song "Asterisk" was the opening song for the anime series "Bleach" and is pretty easy to get hold of if you fancy checking them out. Their latest album "Natural" is a lot more polished and, in my opinion, enjoyable than their earlier stuff.

Other good japanese music worth checking out if you are into that sort of thing;

Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Home Made Kazoku
UVERworld
Scafull King

I find myself listening to this stuff more than anything at the moment for some reason.

I listen to B'z and X Japan for my Japanese music tastes, both kind of opposite ends of the music group, one's great fun music and the other is amazingly powerful and dramatic often, great mix of metal, symphony and just about everything else I highly recommend a listen to either.

I just bought a best of for Anthrax, the GTA: Vice City soundtrack (the big 7 disc one), 'Yer Favourites' by the Tragically Hip, The Prodigy 'Their Law' collection as well as the DVD. All have been good purchases.

I also opted NOT to buy a few nice Beastie Boys discs because of pathetic copy control that's labeled on the packages. If the copy protection proclaimations take up more of the package than the artists I ain't buying, especially if you require me to have anything more than standard CD playing equipment. You guys lost a sale, and a few other artists as well.
