Got the new Arctic Monkeys album "Whatever you say I am, that's what I am not" today, and I've been enjoying it. It's just upbeat, jumpy, rough-around the edges rock music with punk and ska influences. No deep philosophical musings or pretentious lyrics, but plenty of lines that will strike a chord with young folks in the UK at any rate ("there's only music, so that there's new ring tones"). On first hearing their big hit "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor" I was a bit worried they would have an album full of tracks that didn't live up to it, but instead most of the tracks are actually stronger than that one. Check out "You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Looking At Me", "From The Ritz To The Rubble", or "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured" (a track title that will no doubt get a smile from us gamers!), but to be honest most tracks are pretty indicative of their style. Far from the most varied of albums, but their one slow track "Riot Van" is probably the weakest of the lot so maybe the relentlessly upbeat approach was a wise move!

Also got the new Yellowcard album "Lights and Sounds" a few days ago. I really enjoyed their last and first proper album "Ocean Avenue", which was pretty standard pop-punk with the fairly novel twist of having a dedicated violin player in the band making them stand out a little. My initial reaction to this new album was not being very impressed, but while a few of the tracks really are quite dull, some of the others have grown on me a whole lot. The title track "Lights and Sounds" is good, solid pop-punk with a chorus thats catchy and ever-tempting to sing a long to, and other tracks like "Sure Things Fall", "City of Devils", and "Martin Sheen or JFK" are all great tracks for their own reasons. Like many bands these days they have a token anti-war track "Two Weeks From Twenty" that seems a bit too cliched and forced for my liking, almost like they are just cashing in on the Green Day success. Thankfully the album ends on a high note after a few mediocre tracks in the latter half, with the really nice "How I Go" featuring orchestra backup and guest female vocals which work nicely together with the lead vocalist.

The new Ordinary Boys album "Brassbound" should be arriving tomorrow hopefully <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

Holy moses, can it be, I agree at least partially with ReNo's musical tastes? :o 'cause I've got, well, only the first song on that Arctic Monkeys album and it's good.

One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

The Garden State soundtrack is one of the "chillest" CD's I've listened to in a long time.

It's playing right now, and it fits my quiet mood perfectly.

If you're looking for more chilled stuff, check out Zero 7 - I think they even have a track on Garden State if I recall correctly, but Simple Things is a great album, IMO.

Morcheeba is a bit darker at times (try Blindfold or Trigger Hippie for a bit darker, Coming Down Gently and Shoulder Holster for lighter stuff), but still kinda chill-esque. Goldfrapp is a bit more out there in terms of sampling to instrument/vocal work ratio, but they're still pretty good. Utopia is just a beautiful song, Hairy trees and Lovely Head are pretty good too.

On an unrelated note, I've been listening to this crazy little band called "The Go! Team" recently, and I don't really know why, but I love it. Think crazy horns/drums mixed in with 2 parts school-children shouting lyrics and 1 part pure kinetic energy. Bottle Rocket is a bit lighter, The Power is On is just crazy-good, and The Ice Storm is just great. The album overall (Thunder Lightning Strike) is pretty good, as they keep things interesting and change styles a bit on each song.

Not sure if anyones listened to them or heard of them, but I love the band called Hollywood Undead. They got some original songs and their style is like a hip-hop/metal type sound (suprisingly they can go together). Heres there link at their myspace page. Its the only site they have until their official sites up. At the myspace, you can listen to their songs.

Yeah I know its myspace

The songs No 5 and My Black Dahlia are my favorites. No 5 is a party song and the other is just a good song I think. <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif"> Any opinions welcome.

Usually any music I bring to this site gets shot down fast. But I could care less, you don't have to click that link up there ^^^. Enjoy.

Just bought Californication by RHCP. As usual with them, I absolutely love it. It's got so many of their best songs like Californication, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Around the World. God, pure sex.

That wraps up their latter stuff, I can't wait to get their earlier pre-John Frusciante stuff. Hillel Slovak had some serious talent, and the stuff of Freaky Styley is just great.

And they have a new album coming out in the next couple months! 24 tracks! I'm seeing them live if they go on tour. I love them.

yeeeeah.

Bought The best of the Wildhearts yesterday. Saw them at Rock In the Castle a few months back and never really took to them at the time sadly but now I have a chance to really listen to their stuff and not freeze my arse off on top off a Scarborough sea front, I think they are ace. I wanna go where the people go, greetings from s**tsville, geordie in wonderland...all ace anthemic stuff.

Hello there.

The new Ordinary Boys album "Brassbound" is pretty decent, and I'm glad I picked it up. Their last album, "Over the Counter Culture" was a good debut, particularly the intro/title track which was truly stand out. Sadly the new album doesn't quite have anything that can match that, but it still has its fair share of decent tracks.

Starting off with the title track, "Brassbound" is a fine intro song but nothing hugely noteworthy. A bit of a let down after the great "Over the Counter Culture", but you shouldn't let the first song define the album really. Their single "Boys will be Boys" follows, and is quite a throwback to the traditional British take on Ska - it's so comparable to Madness is almost hurts to be honest. It's a decent enough song but far from the best offered up on the album for me. "Life Will Be The Death Of Me" appeals far more to me, with a laid back ska beat and simple but catchy chorus, as does the next track "Thanks to the Girl", which finally lets off the ska style and settles into a more rocky style. My personal pick from the album - "On An Island" - is next up, and is such a fun, upbeat song that it really just makes you happy to listen to it. Made me think of one or two more recent Catch 22 songs to give an off the top of my head comparison. Of the remaining songs, "Skull & Bones" and "Don't Live Too Fast" are my favourites; the latter with quite a reggae/rasta style bringing back memories of Monkey Island which can never be a bad thing! The album, like the last one, has a cover song, this time in the form of "Rudi's in Love", which to be honest is just not my style. I vastly preferred the version of "Little Bitch" they did for the last album, which was one of the standout tracks for me, but "Rudi's in Love" is pretty much the low point this time around.

I'm listening to Less Than Jake and The Impossibles a lot again. It's brought back fond memories of those days, back when The Impossibles were going to Austin High and doing shows that I was too young to go to (I was like 11 or 12) It's a shame their return-to-the-scene album The Return sucked so bad, I was looking forward to it when I heard they were getting back together. I'm going to spend my christmas gift certificate at the local record store on The Impossibles - Anthology (they damn well better have this CD being the Impossibles' home town!), The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails, and I'll probably pick something else up with the $2 I have left + a few bucks.

Shortly after figuring out MP3's are lame (*cough* bad play on words <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> ) I decided to encode all my CDs in OGG, the problem is that CDs don't last very well for six years. A few of the tracks from the three old CDs I have (coincidentally my favorites) have tracks with brief instances of silence, so I'm going to buy them again.

I also just found Seismic Anamoly (and magnatune.com) while searching for info on OGG. Seismic Anamoly is instrumental hard rock, which kicks quite a lot of ass as far as I'm concerned. Magnatune is the record label, which also kicks a sizable amount of ass. First is how you buy the music, you can choose to download an album in any of 5 formats (
WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC and AAC) for $8, or download it AND get a CD (via mail) with all the album art and stuff for $12.97. After that they allow you to LEGALLY copy the album and give it away 3 times. The website again is www.magnatune.com

I tried out a few songs, and I don't really know what to make of them <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif"> "Bottle Rocket" was the first one I heard, and I really enjoyed it. It's equal parts Beastie Boys and Jackson 5, which is a fun and uplifting combo! A few others like "The Wrath of Mikey" (you can listen on their website), "The Power Is On!", and "We Just Won't Be Defeated" also appealed to me, for goodness knows what reasons! I saw it is going cheap on play.com and in my local HMV, so I might give it a shot. It's so not my usual style, but to hell with it <img src=" SRC="images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif">

I'm not a huge fan of The Rolling Stones, mainly because I've never really taken the time to listen to their stuff, but I listened to "Gimme Shelter" today for the first time and I have to say I really liked the song. It was definitely the one I liked the most. "Sympathy for the Devil" was also pretty good.

Any cultured Stones fans want to point me in the direction of a good CD to buy or songs to download on iTunes?

I also heard about this on the radio last run.

It seems that this guy came into possession of a s**tload of unreleased music preformed by, at that time, relatively unknown artists.

The site doesn't seem to be 56k friendly, so I cannot vouch for it but, its streaming music and supposed to be high quality.

Enjoy.

This is pretty nerdy, but I just bought the Command and Conquer soundtrack off of the iTunes music store (22 songs for 10 dollars -- pretty cheap).

The composer, Frank Klapecki, is awesome. You probably wont enjoy this soundtrack if you didn't spend hours playing the original command and conquer as a kid, but if you did play C&C and remember the music fondly then this is a great purchase.
