It took a couple of days for them to come, like 2-4 days. Don't know if it depends on how often/much you use the account.

They could just as well make gmail avaliable for everyone. If it continues at this pace, everyone'll have an account soon anyway.

That, and it gives them a chance to expand their capacity in a controlled way. If they just throw it open to the public, I doubt they can handle the load.
