I can see where you are coming from, but I disagree. It has been said by Valve that you need steam in order to play HL2, as only once you have an account with a valid HL2 CD key will the game be unlocked and playable. The people who have managed to buy retail copies of HL2 already have found this out, much to their anger I imagine.

All I meant by "nowhere does it say that they will get DoD:S and HL1:S (except for the CE of course)" was that the CE does state that it comes with HL1:S, so of course they should get it. It doesn't say they get DoD:S however, so I assume, and hope, they will not. Don't take this as me being spiteful against others, as that isn't my point at all.

I hope that you are wrong about them listing things because they assume you will have steam and can therefore download them if you bought over steam. If that was the case, I don't see why it wouldn't be listed under the bronze package as well. As far as I can tell, its not listed in bronze or retail ones because those don't allow you access to these games. You will most likely be able to buy them over steam for a modest price or something.

About those copies already sold: I believe someone used a part of the *taboo* version to get HL2 running without steam auth-ing. At least, that's wat some people say.

Did you see the guy on Ebay selling the Ending Sequence Screenshot ?
It's a funny read too:

What valve should offer is a rebate for those people who already own the ENTIRE back catalog and want to get all the source games from the silver pack without wasting money on the catalog. It might seem like only $10 in the US, but its around $15 difference here in australia, and is DoD:S and HL1:S worth paying $80 for, or is $65 for just HL2 and CS:S a better option?

There must be a version which doesn't need Steam authorisation, otherwise review sites/mags wouldn't have been able to play the game already...

The preview copies sent out to reviewers and the like might not have needed steam authentication, but all the retail copies do.

My flatmates got the retail standard copies, and they don't let the person play HL:S. I assume this will also mean they won't be able to play DoD:S, though as it is currently listed as "coming soon" for everyone you can't really tell for sure.

The only thing is though, everyone can play CS:S. And DoD:S is the same thing. But HL:S isn't. Since it's the entire single player campaign. And that's basically what I was saying. I wasn't talking about HL:S at all, and I never said it came with the normal retail

Irenicis, everything that comes with the retail versions is on the CDs.

I'm fairly sure anyone with HL2 will be able to play DoD:S, since it isn't anything different then CS:S, just DoD. [addsig]

Friend of mine got the Collector's Edition...you don't get the back catalogue. And from that I'm sure you don't get DoD:S either. It's not listed and thus not included. Which was my concern when I preordered last week...so I cancelled and got the Gold instead and I'm a lot happier knowing for sure I'm getting all of the other games. It isn't marketing...but rather conflict between developer and two publishers. Activision owns publishing rights to DoD not Vivendi..it couldn't be included as Activision may want that right later on...so it cannot be part of the retail packages. [addsig]

I don't see why you should expect DoD:S to be given out free to everyone, nor do I see what you mean by its the same as CS:S. It has different gameplay, different resources, and different people (or the same ones with more time) making it. From a professional developer, you can't really expect these things to stay free forever. Making DoD retail only would have caused an outrage as fans would have had something taken away from them. In the case of making a 'new' game like DoD:S (regardless of how similar it is to the old one, its still totally independant of it), by charging people for it nobody is having anything taken away but instead they are paying for something. The fact it is listed in silver and gold but not bronze SHOWS that it isn't free, and as Valve are obviously wanting more people to buy over steam I can't imagine they will remove one of that buying option's main attractions by giving it out to retail buyers.

Just because its a multiplayer game doesn't mean it took no effort - if you look at CS:S and HL:S its obvious which of the two took more time on the developer's part. CS:S isn't really given away free, as much as it is half of the deal. It will sell as many copies of HL2 as HL2 sells of CS:S. [addsig]
