Gues what!
[addsig]There is a HL2 multiplayer, because in order to let mods implement multiplay, HL2 had to have multiplayer itself. There is no link to it in the menu, but it has to be enabled through the console. I saw this on some official website, but I don't remember the cvars.
There is no maps, though, for multiplayer. The site I found this out on tells how to make maps for it. I wish I could remember the site.
Also, everthing about the multiplay is enabled through cvar's, including scores, teams, and maps.
It's fairly obvious what happened. They were making a HL2DM type game earlier in development, but then they discovered that allowing everybody to use the gravity gun and having phys objects thrown all over the place would kill the server, and the amount of work it was going to take to correct that may not have been worth it. Plus, if they released a multiplayer that wasn't going to allow for gravity guns, tons of phys objects, vehicles, 64 players, etc they were going to get massive complaints, no matter how technically impossible it was going to be. And even if they did make it, the lag would be ridiculous and once again they'd be accused of being unable to code for multiplayer. So they did the next best thing. They ported over CS, which had no real use for the physics, and was already limited in scope (as it had to work in HL1) and they knew would work, so that there would be some sort of multiplayer component to the game. Fewer people would complain because there are thousands of mindless CS players who would be perfectly happy playing another 3 years of CSS instead of having every single HL2 purchaser complaining about the lacking multiplayer.

Good theory, with one flaw:

Since when did they care about people complaining about how they do things?
Perhaps they should have thought about this back in the day when they said the gravity gun wasn't going to be an actual in-game-weapon.
And yes, there is a DM mode, though there aren't any decent player models (or maps)?
excuse me if i am mistaken, but wouldn't it have been easier to have an HL2DM.sdk without the impossible weapons?
i mean seriously, if its unavailable, you cannot rightly place one.
still, i lean to leps definition, they never bothered removing the gluon/egon and it horribly unbalances a deathmatch map..

Well, when HL1 was released the only real criticism of it besides it's less than cutting edge graphics was the DM multiplayer. According to some people in direct comparsion with it's only competition (SiN) it had the inferior multiplayer option. Look at the reception D3 had with the 4 player DM. I'm certain it would be very difficult if not impossible for D3 to support 32 players or even 16 for that matter without a lot of FPS drops and lag (given that at no point in the game did you see more than like 4 player-sized enemies onscreen), and you still had many people complaining about it, going so far as to question even having a multiplayer with it. Maybe Valve knew that they could never reach the multiplayer expectations everybody had and didn't want that sullying the singleplayer expectations which they knew they had surpassed.
And Orph, everybody would want the gravity gun in multiplayer. It's just too cool and the killing possibilities are mouthwatering. And why would they remove the Egon anyway? In Quake 1 which started the DM craze they had the unbalanced rocket launcher which was everybody's favorite weapon. Maybe Valve just didn't realize how unbalancing the Egon was ![]()

Theres a MP which apparently you can play on right now and find servers, theres only 2 maps [only played one, but noobish lol].

code:
"C:Program FilesSteamSteam.exe" -applaunch 220 -game hl2mp
rename the shortcut to hl2 multi or whatever and have a shufty, lemme know if anyone wants to crank up a server for a play !!

OKAY okay okay.... Listen, I found out that there really is being a MP released for HL2, and not the physics gun isnt a broblem. I have hosted my own HL2 DM match before with about 7 people. and we were throwing allll sorts of stuff around, including spawning about 20-25 jeeps and ariboats for fun. It runs great, and they have awesome Netcode. Lag is hardly a problem. You guys wont be disapointed. To feel reasured about the MP in HL2, then go to this link below and then click on "Developer Interview 2" - it's the one where gabe is at aclatraz. Cant wait to see you all in the game.
