Short question: Is there any way to download the HL2 SDK via HTTP (without Steam)?

Long Question: I can download any amount of stuff via regular HTTP downloads on my college network. No limits on what I can get, how big, how fast etc. It's a mostly unused T1 line, so I can use it for downloading almost anything. But my admin will never agree to opening up any ports other than HTTP. Right now all he allows is FTP, POP, and a couple other ports. So I can't run steam. And it's no use if I try to download it at home. So basically the only option left to me is to somehow get the HL2 SDK via regular internet downloads. Is there any way to do this right now? Or Alternatively, is there any way I can tunnel through the firewall and use Steam?

To get through the router, firewall, whatever, you have to open the ports Steam asks for if they're not already open (if you can't run steam at all, obviously they're not open).

There isn't an http version (Go Steam ) But, that might change when the full sdk is released. [addsig]

my sympathies to any school members not able to acquire the editor due to downloading issues

if there were a way, i would put it in my briefcase for you frag.. if you come up with one, gimme a yell, i'll be happy to help.

What are you talking about? Just copy over the GCF file (sourcesdk.gcf) and as long as he has HL2 it should work.

I imagine it'd be best to take your computer to an open network sometime for authentications. [addsig]

  • I can tunnel apps through HTTP proxy, but only TCP ports. Steam requires UDP.
  • I can tunnel UDP apps separately, but not together with the TCP tunnel because the programs conflict with each other.
  • I've found non conflicting programs, but the TCP tunnelling program uses some old code which doesnt work with the ports steam uses.

I think I'm going to go and cry now.

The ports are most definitely closed. Hopefully I can get the full sdk without steam. I never played anything but hlDM, and stopped playing that when Steam started up anyway.

Thanks a lot for the offer Orph, but the full SDK's GCF might be too big for you to upload at all, even if your briefcase has that much space. Thanks a bunch for the offer though. (PS: this side of the world, college = university and not school)

I'm not buying HL2 until I can confirm that I can get the SDK. And authentication isn't a problem. My home connection can handle that.

I think all you need to do is get the packages/GCF files VIA http, then when you get a chance, take your rig over to a more open connection and validate like there's no tomorrow, then go to offline mode and you'll be able to use Steam at your school.

I believe you mentioned something about your parents home (I assume, since you refer to where you live as school and another place as home) [addsig]

gimme a yell means, locate exactly what i need to upload and i will do it, i shouldn't have to locate it from this end, as i already have it silly, i wouldn't know what is missing

if fraggard knows exactly what i need to do i will be more than happy to upload it.. its only 35 megs, thats no biggie.

My current mode of work is this: I have a desktop at home, where I live, off campus, which I use for work/play. This connection is slower, total data I can transfer is limited, but no restrictions of any sort. The connection is fast enough to play on, so no troubles playing. I just cant get the large files.

I have a laptop, which I lug to my college (university for some of you), download what I want, come home and transfer stuff to my desktop. The T1 line is in the college. But everything is restricted except my total data transfer and speed.

This setup worked for 3 years while Steam didn't exist. And then like the evil landlord in the movies, Steam shows up and demands all kinds of crap from me. Basically my solution so far is that I've played UT2003.

I wasn't saying download ANYTHING at the slower connection. I said AUTHENTICATE there. You can get the SDK gcf file and install HL2 (whatever means fit you) and then take the computer to the slower connection and install HL2, placing in your key and validating it. It'll take a while, but it wont be because of your connection. Then once you're done put steam in offline mode (by exiting and not logging out) and the next time you start it up at college you'll be able to play everything offline.

Could you try talking to the network administrator and ask him/her to allow exceptions for legal programs such as Steam? At my school basically everything was either blocked or had packet limitations that made every single online game unplayable. Some of the more influential students got him to add exceptions to allow for certain programs like WoW, D3, and HL and now it all works great. We still can't use bittorrent or any p2p programs, but we can play HL so it's worth it.
