Why shouldn't 16 and 17 year olds be allowed then? They're allowed to get full-time jobs. Should Valve be farming for new in-house talent (as I would suspect they might be), they could legally take a job offer.

if i had to hazard a guess it would be the age issue of the game itself.

you cannot have a contest that encompasses an age group that is not legally allowed to purchase the game without parental consent.

valve is not going to monitor which parents said "Yes" or "No"

just a thought.

I'd say your most definately right there Orph.

Since HL2 has been rated at R 18+ they cannot legally allow gamers under 18 to participate in an official contest, as the contestants would need to have HL2, therefore a breach of the rating system because Valve would be "encouraging" younger players to buy the game. It would open a whole can of legal worms for Valve, and after the distribution licensing issue with Vivendi thats the last thing Valve would want to do.

do you think everyone on the team developing the map would have to be 18+? because if my brother entered and i did most of the mapping he could just get a cut for letting me use him... but i guess thats probably not the case. and it might be considered fraudulant for him to enter a map that i made. and, since i wont win, the matter of who recieved the credit for making the map would be screwed up too. oh well, i dont really have a problem making maps for free.

btw, best of luck to those who do enter, i really hope someone here gets a prize/recognition!

another btw, i think that the contest is open to those who own hl2 and use steam, not just those who bought it via steam. it was worded crappily though. i also hope im right, for all those who got the retail's sake. i bet there are many, many quality mappers who got the retail, it would be absurd to exclude them.

/edit
last time i checked an M rating was 17+, so i think its the prize mony thing.

I don't think I've ever seen a substantial contest that didn't have the 18+ requirement. I dono why though. There must be a federal law against it. [addsig]

I don't see why someone couldn't use the name of one of their parents or legal guardians.

Last time I checked, you can't be held to a legal document unless you're 18. Meaning, if they allowed people younger then 18 to enter, those people could violate every rule after entering and there isn't much valve could do, besides get humiliated in court if they took it that far. I'm not sure how jobs work however, but I know they're different then contractual obligations.

However, this is only in the US. I have no idea how it works in other nations. [addsig]

/glances at UK retail packaging

Mine says 15+ as a rating, although I suspect it varies between countries. I won't be entering due to age, UK, poor mapping ability, and a 56k pay-as-you-go modem (which means I can't download the SDK).

Got in touch with Autolycus from Valve and he said whether you bought over Steam or retail makes no difference - both are fine to enter. He also said people can have multiple entries, so people could join together and make a team entry and still enter their own level.

So far as I understand it, ratings aren't law, they're suggestions. Game shops follow these suggestions to dictate a company policy on selling the games. If they were law, I think you'd hear at least something about games appealing for lower ratings. Furthermore, you'll notice arcade machines use a more descriptive and less constricting arrangement for labeling the level of maturity required to play the game.

The ratings system is voluntary by the industry and willingly enforced by retail outlets. It's that voluntary status that for the most part has kept government meddling out of the industry, though then you have folks like Orrin Hatch and Joe Lieberman (and Jack Thompson, though he's not active in politics, thankfully) who would, if they had their way, turn the game industry into the next Salem witch hunt. Being turned away from the store counter because you're not 17 sucks (yeah, it happened to me once, way back when, heh), but it's a lot nicer than having government regulations and bans.

Nice one on asking auto, Reno, I was going to bug him about that myself last night but ended up being too busy. [addsig]

You're not really supposed to read the rules anyway, its all lawyer double-speak. Just give the rights to your map over to Valve and stop complaining you!! [addsig]

Surely subscribing to steam is the whole, steam is invading your PC thing, otherwise, noone in the UK can enter! Unless they paid dollars and preloaded steam, but most people i konw didnt, including me.

Does this mean i cant enter (im not gonna do very well anyway, but hey, its a laff)

As for losing the rights to whatever you submit, valve can go, wel, i cant really say in a pulic forum. That just sucks.
