hey,
since now there are 25 people online, i was wondering , becouse it's crowded in here alot, maybe you guys should set up a online chatbox??

would be a cool idea i think

There is a snarkpit IRC channel. It's 'snarkpit' on quakenet I believe.

i would prefer a chatroom here within the pit, assuming i were asked.

i don't want to turn on yet another program just to gab.

many forums have live chatrooms.

No, you don't. If you were to impliment a chat room with normal web tools, it'd be the slowest thing on EARTH. PHP has to have a timer to check the server for changes, meaning it has laggy feed back (unless you program it a different way, which will end up running slow ANYWAY).

Using JavaScript is and even slower language then PHP.

The only way you could do it effeciently would be to use Java (or some other language, Java is just faster) and create a applet/plugin thing for your browser for chatting.

Which is still a pain in the ass!

SO! IRC is a pretty good alternative, not to mention if you're using Mozilla, it isn't a seperate program, they have a fairly nice IRC suite built in.
(I imagine however, those sites wrote something up in Java, or they got an IRC window inside a frame or something.) [addsig]

/me seems to remember blindingly fast chat window entries.. i am assuming that it would be the snarkpits present configuration that would limit a chatroom, not the chatroom itself?

still, truth be told, we use post/topics as live chats most days anyways

i'm always on IRC but i think most people dropping by have no clue of the irc channel, it would be cool to have just a chatbox, that way everyone could chat

More people might use it if it was made more obvious though, perhaps up in the top navigation bar next to the forum link or something?

i do not enjoy my mediocrity around here, but its preferable to the sigma that comes with the green title. besides *whispers* people come to me without the green name, and i don't have to act like a pri** "ahem" someone i am not.

I have encountered this before on many other sites. People seem to have an IRC phobia. The program is a no brainer, and, so long as you don't go onto EFNet and accept exes from total strangers, its idiot proof. Its neither an 31337 h4x0r tool nor an open invitation for the "viruses" and the "lasers".

Its more dangerous and difficult to browse 'free' porn, but everyone manages to do it (the proof being that Lep hasn't a Pornbox!)
