Old Half-life, on a Handheld?

Most of ya out there probably already know about the Nintendo DS, with the two panel display and touch screen. If you do, you probably know that with the touch screen, Nintendo tried porting Metroid Prime to the DS, controlled by the touch screen. I believe that the touch screen is a revolution to the hand held industry, excluding pda's and portable pc's of coarse. There may be loads of old pc games eing portd to the DS from years past that may utilize the touch screen configuration as a primitive mouse set up. Plus, with the new onboard wireless set up, who knows how many people could join in on wireless games. The DS is surely going to blow the N-Gage, portable gaming phone, out of the water.

I ask:

Would you like to see the Half-Life 1 engine on the new Nintendo DS?

When I say engine, I'm not referring to the single player game, I'm talking about seperate cartridges that each have the engine and the mod in one.

This came to my mind, and I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if could play TFC any where, rather than just at my computer?" I say if so, port a current mod that has dozens of maps, grab the best, shrink the size to fit many on the thing. I don't know about you, but evan though it could suck, the HL1 engine on the "NinDS" would be a great keepsake for Half-Life fans out there.

I think that by the time you had managed to port the whole engine over, you could have made a completely new game that actually uses the touch screen in an innovative way, i.e. not just 'to aim'.

Voted #3

If I were to buy a handheld something, I would go for the PSP as it seems now.

1. It would be a waste of resources, because...

2. It wouldn't be fun. Half-Life is a PC game, imagine trying to convert that into something that's fun on a handheld machine. It wasn't that good on the PS2, I see no reason as to why it woud be any better on the DS. It simply wouldn't work.

Anybody got any good PSP info? I'm hoping it will be hacked pretty fast and I will be able to have one as a cheap portable divx player... but this UMD thing doesn't sound to promising. Is there meant to be a compact flash slot? One of those CF-microdrives would turn the PSP into a pretty versatile and all-round amazing machine.

If any hand-held were to have HL (or any other FPS), it should be the DS. Kage, do you even know how the DS works? the Metroid game uses the stylus to create a mouselook-style freelook system, the biggest drawback in general to FPS games on a console (but hardly the devil's mark of a bad game ). All reviews and comments I've seen on this control scheme have it being the most accurate and natural freelook mechanism yet, save for the good ol' keyboard/mouse (and there are some people that still use keyboard/keyboard).

I'd only want to see HLSP on a DS, though. No MP, and sure as hell no mods. It's like having Doom on the GBA or Quake on a cell phone It's the same game, but it's just the coolness factor of doing it that makes it worthwhile. [addsig]

If HL was ever to be on a handheld I'd expect it would probably be on the PSP. They brought the original HL on to PS2 and the game played quite well on the console. [addsig]

Ooh, did they change it or something? Last I heard it was kinda awkward having to use the stylus to look about.

After is was on Dreamcast

DS all the way, if anything, of course.

I'm sorry, the PSP looks like an over-priced-desperate-lunge at more sales. There are design flaws (physically) up the ass. And I have no idea how many hardware/software bugs there are, but knowing Sony they're plentiful.

*sigh* I hate you, Sony. [addsig]

But look at that screen size Not to mention the power benefit it has over the DS. I'm not saying its better or worse than the DS, but I don't think the machine is without merit. [addsig]

Yeah, but nonetheless not worth the price tag.
Did Sony finally make a suitable battery or something? (I'm not sure about the actual specs of the machine)

Lets just put it this way. I have faith in Nintendo's development department. I have negative faith in Sony, period. Any company that has issues with making anything tray-load work properly should take a while to reassess their priorities. [addsig]

I know that but the PS2 version had more stuff and better graphics I think. THe MP didn't offer much though.

I played the DS at my friends house and it was fun for a few minutes until I started to hear cracking noises in my spine and realised I looked like the Exorcist. That thing will hurt your neck after playing it for a while. Also sometimes you might get a glare on the screen and you have to adjust yourself.

Does DS and PSP have some kind of built in light?

I know the DS has a backlight. It apparently became standard after the SP

Spartan, the graphics are the same. In all actuality, I think the only thing separating the DC and PS2 graphically is memory and PS2 has a slightly larger palette size (if I remember correctly). And HL (even in openGL) does not fill either system's capacities. [addsig]

If it's a version that has it's own timing algorithm, it should be fine. [addsig]

My god, There is a supprising amount of people who hate console games, 1 including me. There are way too expensive the graphics are crop and it generally poo, half life was realy horrible on the PS2 and you couldnt realy controll you aiming with controller sticks and so on. You had you had to either use auto aim or the crowbar. Not my sort of fun. [addsig]

I bought a DS a few weeks ago, and while it's the best handheld out there right now, the PSP will blow it away. If HL1 were to be porter to any handheld, it should be the PSP.
