I am rebuilding my old computer (Athlon 2700+) and I was going to put it on a kvm and the router so I could use it a) to compile maps and b) as a dedicated server when I wanted to host a game.

However, I'm wondering if I need TWO copies of HL2 if I want to host a dedicated server on that computer and play on this one. The dedicated server for HL1 was just a separate, free download I think. But since the HL2 dedicated server is part of steam.... would I need a second copy of HL2 to host? That would be such bulls**t..

I should think the Source Dedicated Server is free to download on Steam, and that all you need is a (free) second Steam account?

I don't think you do, but I don't know how.

Easier than a KVM (and cheaper) might be to use VNC. That way the server can be in a cupboard somewhere with only a power cord and network cable.

VNC? Whazzat?

The KVM was only $20, so no biggie there. And the second case fits perfectly under the shelf my primary system is on, so it will be like having a giant super-pc sitting beside me *drool*
