I feel so stupid! I reached the main gate after cruising through the canal and found the gate closed, and after getting through all those Combines and Manhacks inside the building, I reached the broken gate control. But after I turned it and saw the wooden ram smash something (I didn't notice it's the gate), I tried to get over the wire fence by attempting to stack all the barrels so I can jump over.

It was hella difficult and frustrating, and I almost ate my mouse after doing it over and over for an hour. Then I suddenly noticed that the gate has been open all along, and the area on the other side of the fence is never meant to be jumped over.

I wish I realized this earlier, so I didn't stay up way past my bedtime trying to continue the game.

Call me stupid, because I am. But did anyone else make the same mistake?

Stuff like this happened to me a few times before I saw that most of the puzzles in the game could be done so intuitively that I was doing something wrong if it was taking too long.

I got this overcomplication in Hl1, at the end of the whole train track thing. For hours I ran around trying to figure out what would open the big doors at the rocket. Standing beside them kinda helped.

With Cassius' approach you can't go wrong, however I feel this detracts from games; you should either breeze through or be stumped at every step, rather than have to think "now if I were a level designer...."

Yeah, Satchmo, I actually did the same thing I think, and I think it was even at the same part.

I remember running around making piles of s**t for quite a while, trying to hop this damn fence only to mind out I had to shoot something minor to get through. Pain in my ass. [addsig]

Took me a while to figure out I had to knock that oven/washing machine thingy into the life/crane pulley system to elevate a ramp high enough to clear a fence.

Oh how I cringed when I saw

i never did this in HL2 but in HL I was stuck for like Two DAYS in that place with the three big tentacles trying to get through there. [addsig]

I got stuck with the buggy at a checkpoint at one particular point in the game and I think there was some kind of bug preventing me from opening the gates or maybe I was just too stupid to figure out how to get them open. Anyway, I ended up spending 15 minutes trying to fire the buggy over the gates with the grav gun... which eventually worked. If in doubt, brute force or ingenuity seems to work in HL2.

I think that's one of the good things about the game... there are a few different ways of tackling most problems.

you were supposed to unclog the gears on the backside of the gates

then the gears will move and the gate lifts up/

During route kanal when you come across a rickety old bridge above you in a fairly open sewer section (with lots of explosive barrels beneath, and lots of combine soldiers on top ), I couldn't really see an obvious exit and began piling up boxes to try and get out of the sewer. I was really really close, just 32 units away or something, before I finally gave up and looked around again. Only then did I notice the small crawlspace blocked by barrels

Haha... I looked everywhere on the back of the gates for something to release them. Ah well. Time to see the optician me thinks...

I'm stuck at that large metal railway bridge. I've ticked the red button beyonde the force field (omg) and blew up the gunship. Now i can't figure out what to do next... [addsig]

I'm not exactly sure where you're describing. Perhaps I haven't gotten to that point yet. I am still navigating the canal.

But after spending so much time stacking barrels (on top of a cart with wheels, to make things more difficult for myself), I became quite skilled at manipulating objects in the HL2 world. I even managed to stack three levels of barrels vertically (painfully frustrating to make them vertical when they're not) on top of the moving cart. I was careful enough to successfully jump onto the moving cart, and then hop on each successive level of the vertical barrel until I was actually higher than the fence. But despite all that effort, I was still unable to hop over the fence (they must have put some clip brush there).

Perhaps that trick should win me an audition to some Las Vegas sideshow.

Is this where you have got the car-thing right? and whenever you try to drive beside the train, another one comes by and hits you? It is on a bridge with two sets of tracks and one has a train on it?

The button deactivates the forcefields on the bridge; just go back and cross it with the buggy.

Heh, I nearly made it the first time when trying to drive over the railway bridge. But then I head the train in the distance I was like "s**t". I almost made it, but then the train came crashing into me. So I loaded my save game, drove up a bit, heard the train and drove back besides the other train. Stepped out and watched the train pass (which is awesome).

First time I drove right into the train... kinda... painfull...

Next time I remembered my thrusty turbo button... Neat surprize there, yeah...

Oh, just before that button that disabled the force field, you had to get up to that control roomie. While in the 'basement' of that bridge pillar there was a little plateau you could reach by a ladder outside. First time I didn't notice the door that lead to that ladder so I tried to get up there using the barrels 'n stuff aroun there. I felt pretty stupid after I noticed that door... and that was after 15 minutes or so...
