It was on last night. Of course, I didn't watch it due to the fact that it is just a scheme for company's to start creating an MTV3 and targeting the vast gamer audience. It was loaded with musical stars and such, and I thought to myself - 'Why would any gamer watch this instead of...Gaming?'. The answer is obvious.

Anyway...Why am I posting? No surprise that Halo 2 beat out Half-Life 2 as 'Best first person shooter'. Why isn't it a surprise? Because anyone who isn't a f**king gamer automatically sees Halo 2 Ad's strewed upon television, magazines, and other places and goes 'Wow, these gamers must be waiting for this game a lot...If I incorporate the words Halo 2 into my speech, I will be known as a gamer!' - and so far, its worked on the simple-minded fools of the MTV generation. It also won the 'Best design' award - which tells all developers out there 'if you add shiny surfaces to materials and allow duel-wielding, your game will f**kING ROCK'. I can see where the future of games is going, and I don't really like it.

I agree completely. I didn't even bother to watch it. But I saw the outcome. I thought HALO2 sucked balls anyway.

Actually, I like Halo 2. I mean, yes - the Singleplayer is f**king horrible. The leveldesign is repeditive and horribly under-detailed, and its just stupid. But, the multiplayer is fantastic IMO. I love Halo 2 over XBL, and that is one of the best componenets for me. However, I usually hate Halo 2 because of all the fan-boys. All they do is whine about how Halo 2 is superior to every game, and with unbiased feelings I can easily say - that is a crock of s**t. However, all in all, Halo 2 MP is great.

I liked playing Halo 2 online till I discovered it the only way to get a kill was wait for a crowd of people to run by shooting each other and start stealing kills. The only fun thing was CTF on large levels with vehicles. The MP was not as good as the first Halo but I did like the cutscenes and the story. The covenent city was probably one of the sweetest FPS levels I have ever played. There was a lot of crap they left out of the game though due to using a different engine. I think Half Life 2 should've won. Of course it is MTV, so its going to biased. [addsig]

Don't blame MTV, they're pawns. Go after Viacom.

Anyway, I noticed when people say "gamer" they usually only mean console gamer. If you remember in the ads for the piece of s**t they said, "Put down the controller and pick up the remote" as a short video of a Halo 2 cut scene was shown.

I saw a small chunk of the show (s**tty) where they awarded "Most Addictive Game". This category of course contains the odds and ends of games that may or may not fit into any specific genre. Apparently, a FPS or RPG is not considered addictive. Well, Burnout 3 won that oddly enough. The owner of an EA branch and the dude who thought up Burnout came up and gave a little bulls**t. I thought to my self at that point that these two people had nothing to do with the creation of that game. I mean sure, on the one hand he came up with the ideas. And the other guy was a slave driver, but does that really mean they MADE the game? No. The development team did and they don't even get credited anywhere. I've only seen a handful of games where the actual Design team gets crediting and not just the company who funded the project. But I doubt that would EVER happen with an EA title.

I watched most of it, and some of it is, as already said, just stupid. I was disappointed when HL2 got beaten by Halo 2 for best first person action, but I guess it was to be expected. HL2 also lost best new technology, some other one, and most importantly, Best game of the year (of course GTA:SA took it)

It did however take best graphics though, so atleast it walked away with something.

Oh, and Crono, City of Heroes was up for the most addictive game a believe, but of course lost.

CoH isn't really an PRG though. Even though you level up. I don't consider games like Diablo or even morrowind to be RPGs.

GTA SA was another game that got awards simply because it was a GTA game and was on a console. GTA SA wasn't even that good. [addsig]

HL2 certainly doesn't deserve a "best new technology" award. As a whole the engine isn't much of an improvement over the HL1. Most of graphical splendor the game posesses comes from great textures and nifty water.

HL2 was the only game in the category, if I recall correctly, which is just stupid It doesn't really qualify for much of a technological leap.

But for the love of whatever deity (or lack thereof) you hold dear, lay off the console hate machine. Halo 2 sold 5 million copies in like a week. I don't know how many GTA has sold thus far, but it's a few million as well. The PS2 has an installed base of something like 25 million, I think. Xbox, somewhere in the 15 million range. PC games hitting even 500,000 copies is a rarity. PC Gaming is not the extent of the gaming world; it's only a very small part of it. More people know what Halo is than know what Half-Life is.

The only thing I take issue with is the whole idea of this hip-hop game community bulls**t that everyone seems to embrace (like the graffiti-ized VGA web site). Games have quickly become one of the most binding forces of commonality in society. What else but an online game can bring together people of all races, religions, genders, creeds, and lifestyles into a single environment? Some marketing department needs to pick up on this.

Consoles are just as viable a form of entertainment as a computer, and far more common. Deal with it. [addsig]

I never said it wasn't. And I'm not bashing consoles. My point was many people will look at certain console games and go, "that has major technological feats" when there may be a PC game that blows it away. That's all.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that that whole rant was directed at you. More of a general rambling inspired by parts of this and many other threads over the last weeks or so.

I do agree with the DS winning the technology thing, though. It treads a fine line between gimmick and useful feature, but games like Metroid Prime: Hunters really demonstrate what sort of power you can get out of it. It'll be cool seeing what some of the more experimental developers try with the dual screen setup. [addsig]

My friend has a DS and the graphics are better than N64. I hope port OOT and Starcraft over to the DS. [addsig]

It looks like the gimmicky touch screen will actually be a wonderful addition to gameplay in many games

RTS games may make a huge come back on the DS. Because the thing is really set up for that type of gameplay.

I know they're re-making certain snes games for it as well (I heard Chrono Trigger was amongst them), but I may be wrong.

My friend has the Metroid demo, Mario 64, and FF6 on the DS. The touch screen works out quite well. [addsig]
