I reckon the original was the best in terms of storyline and gameplay. Op4 had the gameplay but the storyline was just plain vanilla (You're a soldier fighting aliens. Now that's original!). Blue Shift was just c__p. Less weapons, less monsters, less action, less storyline, not to mention it had no multiplayer (!)

Blue Shift had less of everything, true, but the little it did, it did
well. The puzzles, set-pieces, and Xen were all well done. Level design
also seemed better in general. To me, it was also the closest to
humanizing the NPC's. The various scientists and Dr. Rosenburg seemed a
bit more real than NPC's in OpFor, where you would meet nameless
soldiers who would be left behind for a jumping puzzle. Contrast this
to Blue Shift, where Rosenburg accompanies you for several maps and
then maintains contact for the rest of the map-pack. I just feel like I
"got to know" Rosenburg better.
Plus, I'll never forget the Blue Shift disaster sequence. It's great.

Only the Blue Shift doesn't end with the boss. That was something new in HL. I think also that HL: BS have got more detailed maps that other parts haven't.
