who knows if some of this has been posted already; i'm n00b here, have read
dozens of posts, and haven't seen it mentioned yet so....

1. wtf, no crowbar in deathmatch? correct me if i'm wrong, but considering
when i add one to a testmap hldm doesn't recognize it (gravgun don't bring about the same happiness as a good whack to the head)

2. i LOVED going thru hl2 but for DM i sure miss tripmines, satchels, and lasers.. (hornetgun was always lame imho) Even if only for the bored night of laying thousands of tripmines and a single satchel then lasering up to a roof to watch the fireworks.

3. ladders suck now (read thru on another post) hope fix is forecoming

any information on this.. will/have these been added? am i missing something?

I don't know about you, but the sight of seeing a body being thrown backwards after a heater thrown from your gravity gun collided with his chest is twice as nice as using a bare-bones melee weapon.

HL2DM definately has its problems, but I've gotten more enjoyment out of it than any other deathmatch game I've ever played.

I think there are 2 things here.

1. Valve really wanted to make a simple DM that focused on physics. Swapping the crowbar with the GravGun on spawn forces people to use this mechanic. Oh, and Jesus, slamming someone in the face with an explosive barrel is 10 times more satisfying, to me, than a crowbar!

2. There are other mods out there (AG2) that have a bright future with some hybrid HL1/HL2 DM game. Valve knows that the people making these mods are going to put way more attention and love into it than they would have. Plopping all the old HLDM weapons into HL2DM would have stolen some of their thunder. This way, it's a clean, simple DM, and leaves plenty of room for other mods that want to take it further.

3. Oh, and here's a third. Honestly, the Tau (Gauss gun) would have destroyed this game. I LOVE HLDM! I LOVE the Tau! Speaking from experience, though, If all of the original HLDM weapons were in this game; the new players who wanted to experience the physics and have fun tossing things around, would have been pushed into using the Tau, because it is such an all powerful, dominating weapon. All of the vet HLDM players would have had a field day raping all the new players.

sure sure.. physics adds a whole new demension; awesome too. but in some ways
a steam heater volley from 20 feet doesn't have the balls as dodging a quake shakin
shooter and signing his head with a snap-on

agreed tho... i'm gunna waste countless hours in hl's dm

Before we start lets not start another "valve sucks because of HL2DM" thread like the many at the steam forums.
Here is my Breakdown:
1)I dont know what everyone is talking about with the ladders, they have worked fine for me.
2) The weapons you start off with is lame, mainly the AR rifle, starting with it depletes the piont to even have it in the game.
3) Tau cannon, although I wish to god that this weapon was in HLDM, I agree with Finger, the original HLDM players would dominate the playing field.
4) The crossbow, although the new one is great, I hope that in the future walve will make it an instant shot, to balance out game play as far as a sniper's nitch in the game.
All in all the game was a bummer for me, there were too little maps to play, but the ones that did come with it were nice (hopefully valve will release some nice ones)

Oh well, so you don't like HL2DM. My mystic crystal ball tells me there'll be just as many mods for HL2 as for HL1 to choose from soon enough!

look at the bright side, these people are so stupid that they are still creating killboxes like they were for HL1. it only proves still more how limited their scope goes.

the killbox craze will dwindle as the more talented members begin to release. it usually takes me 6+ weeks to perfect a map for release, damned few can lessen that time period and release quality. they may think they do, but i know better.

just be thankful you have no HL2 sized killboxes to deal with, it would suck ass to download a 5 meg box of space.

I hope the killbox craze does die soon. And i will be very soon indeed when lots of good maps are released. After the Valve mapping contest, there will be TONNES of GREAT maps that didnt get picked that will be released for free. [addsig]

From what I hear, there will soon be an update that will bring back the crowbar as well as the stun stick thing (look under wepons_ you'll see it)

This is the trade off, people wanted a DM game for HL2 so they got it before all the stuff was in it.

same thing with the SDK, etc.

I think its funny that the same people who beg and beg for somthing are the same ones who bitch about that somthing when it comes out three months early.

2) You don't start with the AR rifle (assault rifle rifle?), you start with the SMG. There's a world of difference between the SMG and the Overwatch Rifle. You can get maybe one, two kills with the SMG before running out of ammo, so it's not exactly the best weapon. Also, you have to start with it in order to balance against the grav gun. If you only started with the grav gun and the pistol the grav gun would obviously be the weapon of choice and pistolers would be at a huge disadvantage. The SMG levels the starting field giving you two good options from the get go.

3) Why would the Tau be in DM when not in SP? Besides, you can put the buggy in the game and shoot that one . Also, the Tau sucked ass, and when combined with that goddamned LJ it made for lame DM. Why exactly would we want that again?

4) I didn't think the old crossbow was hitscan, just really really fast. It's not that hard to lead your shots with the new one, and I've found that I can be a surprisingly effective sniper with it after initial doubts of its usefulness.

My opinion of HL2DM is that it's great for what it is, a DM game using the SP weapons and movement. I think the physics add a whole new dimension to the game and make it unique, fun, and dynamic. The only big problem I have with it is that it's limited by the SP game. The movement speed is way to slow for DM and makes fancy dodging nearly impossible now. I'd rather have the aux speed removed and normal speed increased, but that's what DM mods are for I suppose. I also think that there are too few weapons in the game to provide variety. I don't miss the slot 5 explosive weapons too much, but the serious lack of slot 4 superweapons and the starting off with the SMG makes weapon placement boring. You can place like one RPG and one crossbow in a map, and then you're stuck with only the overwatch rifle, the magnum, and the underpowered shotgun to place everywhere else. In this sense I do miss the Tau and regret the starting off with the SMG, but again, that's for mods to change. As it stands HL2DM is fun and chaotic with plenty of uniqueness and variety that will keep it from getting boring.

Oh, and killing people with watermelons will never get old.

If the regular pistol were only slightly more accurate at a distance, it would be the best gun. I saw one guy (who was probably hacking, really) dance around the map giving everyone three quick shots to the temple with the pistol before they could let loose with their SMG's. It was pretty funny.

And yes, you're lucky if you get a kill one player and severely damage another with the 90 SMG rounds you start with. The Physics Gun is really your best bet on the official maps before you get the Shotgun or the Magnum (which, by the way, is a beautiful thing which I love deeply and sexually). The s**tty custom maps, in my experience, usually feature too little in the way of physical objects, removing one-half of HL2DM's gameplay.
