Half-Life 2 Source Code Leaked?  

We were going to hold off on reporting on this until there was official word from Valve, but now Slashdot is reporting (by way of GamersWithJobs) that at least some of the Half-Life 2 source code has leaked.
There is the Half Life 2 source code floating around the net right now. It looks to be about a month old. There's no official word from Valve on the source code leak yet. Unfortunately those who want to use it to cheat already have it, we need to get the word to legitimate customers to educate them about the situation.
A lot of people are making crazy speculations based on the source code, I wouldn't pay much attention to these rumors. We'll have more on this as soon as we hear official word.

UPDATE: Just to clarify, this hasn't been confirmed as legitimate just yet.

 

Probably just another rumor, but wow!  Another screw up on Valve's end...?

bloody heavy screw up were it to be true. Its quite scary tbh. I mean cheats would be uber simple for those with knowledge. [addsig]

There is *something* going around. People have supposedly tried compiling it in, but the furthest anyone seems to have got is an .EXE which doesn't work but has a nice icon I'm a bit wary though, as although it seems genuine there's some unexpected things, e.g. code for a tf2.exe, a 'worldcraft' folder (isn't it hammer?), and a few dodgy uses of GPL code :/

due to microsofts outlook express being not so secure, Someone was able to use Gabe Newels e-mail account & take the hl2 source code.

How long has it been since VALVe/Vivendi first suggested that there "might" be a delay in the release?
(And then denied it, and then confirmed it...)

Well, for all we know this "leak" could just be a stunt Valve is pulling to get attention (one never knows).

The code is out there... It's on torrent. I don't suggest you download it, but know that tons of people have and they all say that its for real. I have not downloaded it by the way, nor will I.

i wouldn't know what to do with it if i did go get it..

BTW, this new torrent is pretty good.. so far its batting 100 .. what i download, is what i recieve.. kazaa is cool, but too many people alter the names

Gabe has posted on halflife2.net I believe. Username Gabe As for the source code, I don't really think anybody will end up with a compiled version of it that gets mistaken for the final product...

Why :/ ? Surely it's better if they can't. What does anybody think about claims they will have to now rework some of the code to avoid exploits based on the leaked stuff? With this whole leaked 'thing', I can't help but think why the hell have these machines connected to the internet at all? Why not have two internal networks, one with no conenction to the inter whatsoever, used for making the game and sending eachother the files for that, and another one with an internet connection for whatever they need that for? It's all very well to sit there and say why should we have to take such measures, that's not fair, but hey... the world is not fair.
