It might be necessary if you have other not-so-computer-savvy people using your machine

Can someone explain to me the logic of having virus protection on 24/7? It seems to me like a waste of computer resources, especially given how rarely I've gotten viruses (once in 11 years). Is it really that hard to not open and run executable files you get from spam mail?
Really, I have never HAD a virus on my computers EVER. Only at work on our exchange server. And I am always REALLY tempted to open those penis enlargement EXE's.

two possibilities i can think of.
1) it is.
2) you need to set your bios to accept a card of that type.

in your BIOS in soem "advanced settings" or another, you will find "Video Aperture" or something similar. Set this as high as it will go, usually 256. my bet is that it's set at 64!

You got disconnected and reconnected very quickly. Check your network connection. (My PSU connection was like that once, and my computer was continually rebooting. Very annoying!)
