This project needs its own topic, to help cut down on confusion. habboi and I are in charge of this project.
Here is how it will work out.
First we will
need a team of people who want to make this map. If you want to
contribute e-mail me at drglass@gmail.com. In the e-mail people
include:
Name
Location
how much you want to contribute (i.e. small, medium, large)
A little about yourself and your mapping experiance (noob or guru, your all invited)
Once we know how many people we be in on this I will layout that
map. Basicaly I will outline each area with a brush and add the
connections. Each person will then be sent their area of the
map. It will work out like this.
You will be limited to the size of your "box" and you will have to some
how connect your "mini map" to the "door" (the door will be more
like a large hole, this is the only thing you will share with the other
"mini maps")
we will work out a system for naming entities and how many props each person will be able to use.
If any one can help with some web space, that would be great.

be sure to send me an e-mail.
The fact that everyone will do somthing diffrent is what makes this cool.
Think about running through city 17, and jumping down a man hole only to fall onto the roof of a castle! then walking through a door into a cave. Then from there you climb a ladder into a house on the beach.
once I find the hl1 community map you can fire it up and see.

I'm definatly with you. Already sent the e-mail. I'm very curious on
how it will work out. I already like what twhl did, it was kinda funny
when you left a blocky and texture overscaled map and entered a highly
detailed room with contrastful lightning etc. This looks like it's
gonna be real fun.

SO far there are only about 4 people mapping and 2 people helping with
web space. My goal is 10 mappers. I was hoping to draw
talent from snarkpit, so I'll give it a few more days then head over to
valve-erc and see if I can pick up a few people.
If you know anyone who would be intrested please send them my way.
thanks everyone.
[edit] also I want to wait till after the valve map contest is over, and people have gotten back into the rythem of school.

I don't mean to rain on your parade guys, but maybe it isn't such a great idea. I've noticed that only about half of you have ever actually finished a map, with the other half still in the process. Perhaps you'd be better of waiting till you've at least finished an individual map each, because its gonna be a hell of a lot easier than the group project your proposing. Then, once you've had that experience you can try something like this. Just remember the Snarkpit crew map, with its team of experienced mappers. It still hasn't been finished or released.

In a way I agree, but also I think this could be a great way for people new(ish) to mapping to learn new things
As long as you don't call it "snarkpit_map" or something though!

I get your point 'Agent Smith' but thats the beauty of it because all you have to do is make one area (small, medium or large). Me and Dr Glass will then construct it together so they wont have to, unless they wish to.

I for one have made many maps, but I have only finished a few.
I would agree that this dosn't look like it would work, but when you are faced with only creating a small room or section of a map it is quite easy. Look at all the 50% done maps out there, if you took a piece of all of them and tied them together they would make a full map.
As long as the layout of the map is made correctly and the mappers dont deviate from the rules this should work out fine.
Here is the section I did for the ill fated DM4 map project (the map turned out to be far too large) I think that any mapper could make something of that size. It was only a few hallways around a large court yard.
I also agree that this will be a great learning tool, becuase there will be noobs working next to people who know what they are doing.
