Terminator original was cool, Terminator 2 was not as cool, and Terminator 3 was craptastic.

Hrmm, I'll take the Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in Fight Club and raise one Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard in American History X, then two Johnny Depp's, one for Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and another for George Yung in Blow. [addsig]

Russell Crowe in LA Confidential

Snatch, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, and Boondock Saints are also favorites of mine. Oh, I also love Kevin Spacey in LA Confidential and Usual Suspects.

i measure actors by their ability to swap hats and do it convincingly.

few actors can pull this off to my satisfaction. a notable exception is whoopi goldberg, she can do any part, and have you laughing at the appropriate times, crying on cue, angry or full of pity with equal and unparalleled grace.

actors whom are stereotyped can still act well, and do an excellent job in their field, but never will they be in my top lists.

/ 2cents.

I see we have similar taste in movies (/me looks at his own post quote)

One of the best movie character has to be Samuel Jackson in Pulp Fiction as the scripture-reading, veggie-eating, and gun-totting assasin who carries a motherf**king wallet.

Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" was quite memorable too, especially the orgasm scene.

if i remember actors correctly, i think the best performance by this woman was the movie she made about the female chopper pilot who was wrongly accused, then it turns up she was a hero.

this flick had me slobbering all over myself.

/me goes and checks.. BRB

[edit] this flick was her best IMO.

I cannot believe this thread has gone this long without mentioning Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface. Whether you liked the movie or not, you must admit, Pacino was very convincing.

Orph...I can't stand Whoopi, but that is besides the point. I too measure actors by how well they can switch roles and do it transparently. For this I have to say Robert De Niro is one of the best. That dude has been in so many different roles....and I'll bet you can't find ONE where he isn't believeable. He has been in comedies, dramas, cartoons (his voice), thrillers.....he has played all sorts of roles.

i am glad you agree, but cannot fathom why one would dislike whoopi.. i also find it odd that you pick one of the few actors i dislike. still we each share the belief of "how" we measure greatness

BTW, i was not asking for a clarification of why you dislike her, its unimportant.

The title of the movie is "Courage Under Fire". It's a decent movie, but nothing too memorable for me. She also played an alcoholic in "When a Man Loves a Woman" with Andy Garcia. Her dramatic roles just aren't as convincing for me. I prefer to see her in the quintessential romantic comedy roles (she probably hates to be type-casted that way though).

What about Jim Carrey in "The Mask"? That was a character that won't be forgotten easily (and Cameron Diaz in the same movie, as her breakout role). [addsig]

He was in "The Mighty", but that film was a big flop. I don't think he has any dramatic acting skill either, but he's a great fit for The Mask. [addsig]

jim did a a bit part in an excellent movie called "Simon Birch"

its an absolute must see if you have not done so already. i heard that jim did the movie with no money being paid to him. he liked the script so well, he offered to do it free. no one said he could do serious, so he set out to prove them wrong. he did well.

the movie, had almost nothing to do with jim. IMO it was one of his best, even though he did very little in getting it there.
