Either form of spelled/spelt and learned/learnt is acceptable, as it happens.

We always debate this

you wouldn't be impressed if books in school were all written like "omg wtf boo radlye!!!1 l4m3r".

Give it time; I foresee the mass extinction of all vowels by 2020, and by 2050 the entire English language will have reverted back to a muffled grunting sound.

Seriously! Mobile phones and mass stupidity have quickly taken hold of this, and the next generation. It's only a matter of time untill the number 8 becomes the 27th letter of the alphabet.

It'll mess up scrabble too, what with the over use of the 'cool' letters, X K, Z and 0

Repent...!

Actually I think that the "cool letters" not are E- and I: Ipod Email Imac Eharmony. QXKZ are all popular for radio stations. ALSO more and more product names are being spelled wrong. K is substituted in for C. Z takes over for S at the end of words. The U taking over for many sounds like "Gurl" or some even spell it "Grrl" E takes over for many sounds as in "werd up" as i have seen.

In my 5th graade year i was a finalist in a spelling bee, I was asked to spell "Barbecue" I did not spell it BBQ as so many places spell it, but i spelled it "Barbeque" as it is spelled on every restaurant and product i have seen to date. This is, however, improper spelling. This is just one example of how our stupid-spelling culture f**ks things up.

Don't get me started on the drive "thru"! That is one that pisses me off endlessly because I have a friend who claims that is the proper way to spell "through".

Oh, geez. You know that is the sort of thing I'm talking about. Oh yeah i've noticed you're pretty smart. what degrees do you have? and why do you know all this stuff, You are one of the few ppl I have seen using words like i use like "Quantum mechanics" other things like that "thermodynamics." You seem to be at least at my level, which is saying something.

I graduated last spring with a bachelors in Chemistry, and a minor in Physics. Mostly Chemists don't worry overly much about quantum mechanics (not baccalaureates anyway), but I did allot of scanning tunneling microscopy for my senior research project, so I got to learn quite a bit about it. As for thermo, it was one of my favorite classes. I think the Second Law is about the best Bulls**t-O-Meter anyone could ever hope for. [addsig]

Some people here don't speak English, so they're excused. Everyone here is human, so some mistakes are still acceptable. The only other excuse for complete lack of spelling and grammer is mental disability. If you refuse to speak properly, we will assume you are mentally disabled and treat you accordingly. [addsig]

Not all disabilities cause bad spelling... Just about every one of my friends has at least one , but they can sure spell adequatly. I had a teacher who couldn't spell anything longer than 6 letters, but he has been one of the most inspirational and hard working teachers ive ever had , Very intelligent just "couldnt spell to save his life". Thru ,u and all those other shortenings are caused by the person who has typed them. A disabled person might type yoo or yu as equally as u. Disabilties are only an excuse if you mispell the word in a way that its not typical internet shortenings = P.

Both spelled and spelt are valid. But "spelled" seems very informal when used compared to spelt. Same goes for a lot of words. Oddly enough many tend to be the general American form.
