I'm very much a DOOM fan. It's just that Doom 3 isn't much like Doom at all.. it plays more like Quake 1, which I hated. And it was just.. well.. boring? It felt more like a tech demo than a game. At least HL2 tried to innovate -gameplay- on some level, and did so pretty successfully.

Quake IV, though, sounds like they are moving in the right direction with the engine. Though I still don't like how 'plastic' everything looks.

Yak, D3 was showing physics (and would have had this functionality and probably considered the weapon) before HL2 even was announced. And please don't try to tell me of all people it was probably just console commands. [addsig]

KFS, I know more about D3's engine more than you could ever hope

EDIT: Before I get yelled at, this was a joke!

I loved all the Dooms. Although everyone is complaining about linearity and lack of new ideas, just look at HL2 and Halo2 or any other newborn/old FPS game they are almost without exception "piperuns", all of them, very beautiful "piperuns", but still "piperuns"... It's the same with the weapons. There are only couple of slightly innovative ones present in the new games, but most of the time it's just the same s**t all over again. [addsig]

"It's one of those things that's just fun, and we've had it around in our engine," Hooper explains, "we actually used it as a tool throughout development where we'd grab physics objects and place them around the world."

I think this is bs, why don't they just say "we saw how sucessfull the gravity gun was in HL2, so we decided to incorporate our own"? Im all for a grav gun in the next doom 3 expansion, but id should admit that they are copying the HL2 grav gun. And whos Hopper to say that? Carmak designed the engine, so they should have quoted him, and not hopper, he was a level designer....None-the-less I like the idea, now we wil see a genuine physics engine made by id, not like the one that valve licenced in HL2.

Nobody "admits" they are borrowing ideas but it happens all the time. Even if you are ripping something off, in a commercial situation you don't just come out and say it, so you can hardly expect id to do so either.

My flatmate started playing around with Doom3 editing and I saw him picking corpses up by different parts using a gun like tool and swinging them around, which I assume is the grabber thing they were talking about. It look a bit more developed than a console command - its not really fair to jump to such conclusions Yak.

Doom 3 didn't really grab my interest to be honest, mainly because it was rather repetitive in both gameplay and environments. Yes it sounds like they are just implementing all the current "action standards", but it will probably make what was a rather dull game, more exciting and varied.

Omega, it doesn't matter, he was still involved in development and used these tools.

I think any additions they make (well) would be good additions. Because past the atmosphere of D3 ... there isn't much there to keep you entertained (past the whole beat the game mind set)

However, in this light I don't think people should be as critical, because I know people who feel the same way about HL.

:/ What can I say? I'm a natural long jumper.

This still reminds me of Vanilla Ice and his 'borrowing' of the bass line from Queen's 'Under Pressure'.

At the risk of being flamed I'll say this:

Let us never forget that Half-Life (and, in essence, Half-Life 2) is based on the QUAKE II engine code. Meaning that it's IMPOSSIBLE for id Software to "rip on" Valve considering it's technically their own work to begin with.

I played (and still play) Doom III and feel that it went further to capture the feeling that was "Doom" more than Half-Life 2 did. There were moments where atmospherically I felt like I was back on Mars -- that never happened with HL2, Black Mesa, well - wasn't Black Mesa.

I feel they're both great games that have (like always) pushed the envelope of gaming technology much further than ever.

PS: I'm still a member of Team TNT (Final Doom) so I might be a bit more biased but -- hey! You can like both games, huh?

No. Quake. Not Quake 2. Quake. Some lines from Q2, but their license was only for Q1 code.

Carmack even confirmed in his recent blog entry that there are still some Quake code tidbits in HL2/Source. [addsig]

The BFG9000 from Doom 1 was COOL. Best original weapon ever. Second best is the Shrink Ray from Duke3d. (and for those who think the BFG9000 was just a really big plasma gun, www.gamers.org/docs/FAQ/bfgfaq) [addsig]

Intresting how that document refers BFG as Big Fragging Gun as Masters Of Doom(the book) says its "Big F*cking Gun". But all in all I'm still waiting for the day that gives us a FPS with more than one route to victory. Deus Ex came quite close, but sadly no one else seemed to follow its example. [addsig]

I'm sure this shenanegans will pass out in time. Some game will create some uber weapon that creates mass explosions and throws everyone around and such... actually come to think of it thats the redeemer, but nobody copied that... hmmmmm [addsig]
