Really daft question here, but here goes...

Is it worth replacing a reliable 64mb ATi 7500 with a fairly pathetic 128mb GeForce FX5200? I suspect it's worth it, but I need to check. I replaced my brother's old 64mb GeForce 2 with this card temporarily and it didn't perform as well, so I just need to confirm. Bear in mind it's just a spare card I have (bought it, Valve announced it would only run directx 8.1 and that they preferred ATi, so had to get a 9600xt) which I would be shoving into a friend's computer, so buying a bigger and better one isn't really an option. Any suggestions?

It's probably worth it, if not, use your old card and sell the new one to some sucker for $50. [addsig]

Try it. It should perform better though simply because it has twice as much video ram. You'll only notice this regarding textures and such.

I've heard that the drivers for the GeForce FX series are bad, but take that with a grain of salt. The guy who said this knows his computer s**t, but I've never actually experienced any graphics card besides a few select radeons. But I'm guessing it will perform at the very least marginally better. Why not just try it and compare? If you like it better then run with it. If its not as good you can always replace it for the old one, and keep it as junk, spare, or sell it.

Now that's just exactly what I said but in more words. [addsig]

I had the same situation before where I opted to keep my 64MB GF2 over the FX5200 128MB. It's a junk card, even for low-end users.

not worth it.

Wait for a sale or price drop on either a ATI x800series or a geforce 6800series, as those are the best cards out atm. [addsig]

yea but its really a waste of money to spend 100$ on an older card thats not even good.

It is definetly worth it in video cards to go for the high end ones. [addsig]

just because a 100 dollar card isn't the cream of the crop, doesn't mean it can't be good. And if you wait for a price drop on the top of the line you'll just wait forever as new cards are constantly being released, and older cards are constantly getting price cuts. Same applies to most things in comupters

You might be able to pick up a 9800 Pro for little over ?100. But, then again, the pound is worth twice as much as the lowly dollar...
