I think Valve should have an internal panel of judges but also allow inputs from the general mapping community. It's almost kinda like "American Idol" (for us Yankees). The audience and fellow gamers should have some say on which map will be voted winner.
If left to the opinion and taste of a few judges, then I would highly suspect the validity of the vote.

That's a bad suggestion for so many reasons. It's their money and their game, what right do we have to tell them what map to choose for their competition?! And who are they supposed to choose from the community to co-judge, or are you proposing a popular vote (and forgetting that most people are stupid?)
I don't understand why everyone seems to think that Valve will choose a bad map, or will be biased somehow. When have the creators of crossfire, undertow, subtransit and of course snark_pit shown themselves to be bad judges of maps?

reason?, set your sights low, and everything will be better when the results are in.
if you are convinced a s**t map will win, then there is no way you can be disappointed now is there?
its a no lose scenario lep ![]()

Then you find out that all the good mappers sent in their maps on jan 14th and fed ex didn't get any of the maps to valve and the only map that got there was from L337_73DDY, 235,000,000 forum posts over at steampowered.com, and he submitted killb0x_b62...
we can still lose!
oh and after that omega die.

Just cause only three people are official judges doesn't mean they're the only three people that get to play on the map. I'm sure the same interns can be used to fill out a server to see just how well things work.

thanks but I doubt it. Props go to mazemaster.

If VALVe is looking for something that ties in very well with the HL2 world, I believe that the Ravenholm map is quite good, at least from the screens. If they're looking for something with a lot of pizzazz, which might not play so well, and doesn't necessarily look like any locale in HL2, I think dm_district stands a good chance. If they want a map which looks good, plays well and sort-of ties in with the HL2 theme, it's mazemaster's island17.
I've judged gameplay solely from the screens though. I know that's a bad idea but its all I can do.

I also think VALVe should give the mappers who made it into the final release prior knowledge and give them the chance to polish it off, before it goes official. [addsig]

I think the maps here have a good chance of winning, i've seen alot of maps like avalong , but i think gameplay on avalon might be crap and it's the wrong theme i think.
i think that snarkpit will defenatly get a 1st seocnd or third place, 3 maps in top 10 ![]()

two things
1) yup tis my reference to 50% good and 50% crapola.
2) can you imagine the publicity if a snarkpit member manages to capture even one of the top spots.
personally, i think people are stupid to set their sights so high, it leaves only empty space to fall to.. but, i won't pee on anyones parade.. go for gold guys ![]()

Echo is also great, and ReNo has some kind of a chance.
A few others on this site are of a great standard and should place well. (Morbid, Island17, Void, etc.)
But really, 8000 entrants. I reckon only about 1000 of them will even be playtested by the boys at VALVe. They will probably have a bunch of people going through all the maps and getting rid of the crap ones, and keeping the good ones for the judges to look at, and playtest.
So, 1/1000 chance. Feelin' lucky boys? [addsig]

I've also seen a few decent maps at Mapcore which I think stand some kind of a chance.
I'm not sure whether VALVe will go for Gameplay, mixture of prettyness and gameplay, or just prettyness.
You never know with VALVe.... :/ [addsig]
