Map group? Anyone interested?

There are new mappers to Hammer etc. Perhaps we can learn amongst each other and get in contact with each other via MSN or some IRC channel such that we can help each other on our maps? Just a suggestion. Perhaps if we have a rather large scale group there will be enough expertise and we can all learn together and teach others. I was just thinking it would be cool to be part of a group of mappers rather than hunting the net for answers and waiting on posts... Just an idea..

That's an interesting idea. I had actually considered expanding my rented Ventrilo server a bit and creating a room that people here would be welcome to use if you wanted to talk 1-on-1 or with a group about issues. Any interest here?

I cant tell you how hard it is for me to explane to people how to work with hammer over MSN or AIM. There is so much information that a new mapper needs before he even places his first brush.

It took me years of on and off mapping to come up with a finished map. I am still finding out things to help me map (like shift-drag-copy).

I think new mappers need to take the first step and find out on their own the basics of mapping. I'm writing a four part tutorial on just that, and my first section is almost a 5 page outline of all the diffrent options and tools.

The best thing for newbies to do is learn good habits (clipping over carving, VIS blocking, etc)

The version of Worldcraft that came on the Half-Life GotY disc had the best newbie tutorial I have ever seen.

Does anyone have a copy of that? It would sure be useful to new mappers.

I think what Fluke is asking for is the more "hands-on, follow-along" approach. This site is invaluable, to be sure. I've already guided one of my buddies through the basics of hammer using Ventrilo. It's tricky, but helpful once you know where the tools are. Before that, though, it's essential to go through a few of the tutorials that are linked directly to the Help tab in Hammer. I found those quite good as a starting off point.

I think people need the right additute to get started. I've worked with people that just cant seem to do anything on their own, then I've seen some people pick hammer up for the first time and can make a decent map in a few days becuase they worked hard to figure things out on their own. Now I'm not saying we should through the newbies to the wolf all alone, but a group 'class' could be tough with the diffrent learning styles and additudes of people.

There's the VERC forum for mapping, the "discussion" option in the SDK window leads you right to it. From there you can also join a mailing list discussion.

It's been my observation that most attracted to mapping don't enjoy working in a structured hierarchy. The current existance of loose communities (and no, I don't mean like a hippie farm where they have pot luck and orgy dinners every Thursday), like Snarkpit, Mapcore or Countermap, allows for a dynamic exchange of knowledge, techniques and skill. The infobase for HL2 editing is still being tutorialized; if your interests are in helping others, I'd recommend directing your energies towards the creation of that infrastructure.
