Does anyone know how to make it so that you can host games on steam
through a router? i tried looking through the steam website and
stuff and i can't find anything that will help. I've already
forwarded the ports, now i've heard i need to edit a file? i'm
not sure how to do this. anyone know?

Quite obvious, but if you have an additional software firewall installed, make sure you configure it too.
