Yep. I just don't know all the details. Reno is using it for some of his models.

- Gmax also is ?nd very user-friendly, I used to toy around with it, great tutorials too. Exporting to HL2-compatible models is no problemo.
- Blender is quality stuff, but hard to export to HL2.
- Milkshape 3D is kind of basic, I never really got into it.

milkshape is only free for 30 days, then it loses its ability to save anything. and as with most modelling progs, it's gonna take you more than 30 days to learn to use it.
one of its best features is the range of model formats that it can import/export, making it ideal for converting models from one game to another. i think it even beats the big guns on that one.
and now that it supports valves vtf texture format, i dont have any reason to learn another editor.
not free, but at less than ?15, it's not far away from free.

yeah g-max is good.
Maya PLE is decent as very few things are disabled so its really not crippleware. The only annoying things are that the perspective view when switched to shaded has an overlay saying MAYA PLe etc. Damn annoying, but otherwise its a great tool. I believe renders may be limited with the same overlay.

Well generally prices like that are paid by companies who are going to use the software to make a profit. People, most likely such as yourself, who are using the software for personal learning tend to just get pirated / trial versions. I doubt even the developers of said software expect to make many $7000 sales to individuals who aren't using the software as part of a business.

But, Cobra, if you have $7,000 to burn, isn't there other things you could have spent it on. Because, honestly, there are better, cheaper, programs then Maya. [addsig]

Yeah, either you are one rich dude or you better be using it for something beyond casual map modelling.
