It is a cool game though. It'd just help if what you did mattered.

The game, simply put, is a must buy. The battle with the flying colossus is hands down the most unbelievably thrilling videogame experience I've ever had.
People kept walking by my room and I would just pull them in so they could watch... and they were all really impressed.
The music is great, because it's situational. The graphical scope and the art direction is something that needs to be seen. Your horse, Agro, especially looks photo realistic.
And the bottom line is this game is fun, and its fun because it looks amazing, it requires thinking, and its visceral and cinematic.

I'm giving morphine s**t because he semi-refuses to shell out bucks for Ico.
Buy it, now!

[edit]You should see the stack of games I've aquired recently. I <3 bargain hunting/rack, eBay and 'obsoletion'. I need to make new shelves, they're all full and I have 1x 6" stack, 7x 1' stacks and 1x 2' stack of games/movies/DVDs that aren't sorted around my room. Not all are worthy and I'm sure there's probably a few empty cases but I really need shelf space. :P It's turning into a library. I'll post a picture when I borrow my girlfriend's camera.

My preliminary overall score for it is 8.5/10. Even though the story is lame and the graphics are pretty out-dated, the great gameplay makes up for it.
Graphics: 8/10 - although out-dated they are colorful and attractive, and the spell/technique animations look good. They are above average for a tactics RPG, and fit the game well.
Sound: 7/10 - The music is mostly cheery video game music, but there are some moody/dramatic tracks in some story parts. Its not memorable, its not annoying, its just there and it fits pretty well. The english voice-overs on the other hand are pretty bad, I switched it to Japanese. Also, the people say stuff when they are attacking and it gets pretty repetative.
Gameplay: 10/10 - It really brings something new and innovative to the table in the gameplay department. There is a deep level of party customization, making you think about balancing your characters and pairing them with the right weapons. The battle system keeps you thinking about when and where to bring out which fighters and on which objects, as all of those factors can affect the outcome of the battle. A really unique game definitely worth checking out for RPG fans.

I'll continue my shopping spree and order Ico and RE4. I probably wont play them until Thanksgiving... but yes, I will buy Ico!

Baron - if you like Phantom Brave, check out Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, and Makai Kingdom. All of them are made by the same developer and are just somewhat different game mechanics built upon the same basic turn based system. Disgaea in particular is exceptional and has some great light hearted humour, though it is tile based as opposed to the free roaming nature of the others. My flatmate has been playing Makai Kingdom - the newest of the games - solid since he bought it. I'm thinking that means its pretty damn good too

Or at least, almost...
In other words, I picked up Evil Genius a few days ago. All in all, an enjoyable game with definitely a good sense of humor and a great deal of detail. The controls lack a bit at times though and that's the weakest point of this game: it's sometimes hard to work with and sometimes you're just waiting for something to happen, but besides that, it's a good game. Who wouldn't want to 'interrogate' an enemy super agent with an scientific experimental laser or just put them in the kitchens bowl for a whirl?

Bought Civ4 at the weekend to play at work during lunch hours.
Decided to try it at home as I had a few spare hours but it wouldn't even load. After reading a bunch of forum posts apparently many Ati users (I've got an Ati 256mb 850XT PE) can't even run the game at all, no matter what drivers they use.
Anyway, tried it at work; my work PC has an Nvidia Quadro 500/600 card (ok, the Quadro is more tailored to 3D packages but should be more than capable of running it ok since the minimum required is supposedly a Geforce 2.) Performance is appalling. Seriously. Even after turning all the graphical options to their lowest settings.
Also tried it on my second PC at home, which has an Nvidia 5600 (PC spec is still way above min required; 2.6ghz, 1gig ram.) Again, performance is diabolical, and this is early-game, still B.C.
Real shame, since on first impressions the game itself seems to be really good and many website reviews are proclaiming it to be a return to form. Probably have to leave it on the shelf until these technicial issues are addressed though. " SRC="images/smiles/sad.gif">

I picked up a couple of cheap older games for the Xbox today since I finished off Call of Cthulhu. Tenchu: Return to Darkness is an improved port of the PS2 Wrath of Heaven, or so I'm told, but this is my rather late introduction to the series. I've only played through the tutorial and mucked about in the first mission (crashed on me twice - damn my crappy xbox drive!), but it seems cool. There are definately niggles - the running animation looks far too "fast" for the pathetic speed the ninja's actually move at, for example - but all in all I think it will be fun. 2 player coop should be a laugh too, if I can tear one of my flatmates away from Civ 4 for long enough to play it with me!
The other game was Still Life, which I believe Crono mentioned once before. Reminds me of a mix between Shadow Hearts (the presentation) and Fahrenheit (character switching, gameplay style - albeit without the shenmue style QTE), with obvious comparisons to the Broken Sword series aside. While it is certainly frustrating in many ways (it is SOOO not optimised for the consoles' control method!), I think it should have enough redeeming features to see me through it.

I picked up a couple games yesterday, 007: Everything or Nothing and Breath of Fire 4 for PS2, $10 each
I went to Fry's today to grab some DVD-R and low and behold, I realized NO ONE BUYS GAMES AT FRY'S. So, I actually found a new copy of AstroBoy for GBA ... in fact, I found over ten new copies. They still have many things that are sold out everywhere else.
It was only $16 too
I'll have to go for another visit sometime.
Another game a lot of people haven't checked out that's pretty good is Cold Fear. f**k that, it's really good. It has a terrible story, but great gameplay. Very remnant of RE4.

I'll weigh in later once I've completed the game.
Oh, and I really wish you could strafe.

Indeed, a lot of things you do (or not do) will effect what happens later in the game; I can think of a few large action scenes that may not have happened had I done things differently in earlier scenes. There are also bits where you can pick a scene from a number of them happening at the same time in the story, so you get perspectives from different characters. The story is a good 'un as well, with realistic characters and great voice acting.
Oh, there are sex scenes in it as well. Yes, they are interactive, though not as much as you may like them to be. Still...those French are an odd bunch.

Just completed Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. If any of you think about playing it on a PS2, just bury your head in a pile of landmines for buying the worst console there is- the graphics suck compared to the Gamecube version.
In my opinion, RE4 is better than HL2 in graphics and gameplay. Amazing interactive cutscenes, the best fire I've ever seen in any game, and good old zombies from old sk00l to hybrid mutant ones and massive bosses with spider legs- amazing game. I'd say its worth paying ?30 for a Gamecube and buying the game. Plus on gamecube you can play monkeyball... hours of fun.

While I'd be more inclined to suggest the Gamecube version of RE4 as well, the PS2 version does have a fair old amount of additional stuff, including a 2 hour or something side quest as Ada, a new weapon, and several new costumes. Dunno if they quite offset the balance from the smoother graphics and framerate, but it's worth considering. By most accounts, the PS2 version really doesn't look all that much worse than the gamecube one.

Yer true Xbox Monkeyball is better, but that additional Ada stuff is in the GC version only once you've completed the game, and the additional weapon is the super rocket launcher as in GC version once completed, and the additional costumes come once completed, and you have mercenaries in GC version where you can play as 5 different people.
Seriously, the PS2 is way outa date, and nothing is new on it anymore.

The voice acting is B movie style... and the cut scenes are alright. The locational damage was fun at first, but it gets into a boring pattern of shoot them in the knee then kick them then stab them to death. Killing zombies with 1 bullet like that really isn't challenging.
The boss battles, especially the first one, are boring compared to the ones from the other RE games.
I kind of wish I hadn't bought it. It received such good reviews too! Myrk, does the game pick up any after midway? Because right now it's pretty crappy.
