So this is how it would work. we will set a time, like thursday at 7 EST (-5GMT) and I will host a 'template map' This will consist of a number of small boxes (1500*1500*1500) that are conected by small doors. Every one will be assigned an area and we will all start mapping at a given time. Then after 30-60 minutes we stop. I will stich all the areas together and compile the map. What ever we are left with will be the finished product.
This is a good test of skill and speed. Is any one intrested? If so what is the best day/time for you (be sure to give your time zone). newbie to expert are invited I supose, as long as you can finish something that will compile.

I participated in one of the last ones at VERC and it was rather... interesting. The winner was a hollowed out box of xen textures and a tunnel thing in the middle, with a magnum at the top. Pretty much all the maps are laughably bad, but that's where most of the fun is. Anyways, I'm interested, I guess. Just catch me in #snarkpit whenever.

Have you ever been far along in making a map, but you want to create a new passage that connects 2 pre-existing areas. Does it take you forever to make the opening in both areas, make the passage basic block outline, make it line up, etc? Do you spend a lot of your mapping time manipulating the views instead of making stuff? Thats the sort of stuff that speedmapping will make you better at. It can also help curb excessively prefectionist tendencies that hinder your creative flow. [addsig]

It could be done if you planned rigorously ... but still shoddy.
I hope I never have to work in an XP environment. It sounds incredibly stressful. [addsig]

How about do a map in 1 hour, then compile your map. You have to be honest about it though. Maybe we will meet on IRC or something, then set a start time and end. When time is up we will all submit our maps to someone, then we each compile our own maps (the sending rmf is just to verify nothing new has been added).
Then we can judge them at the end. It can be the new 2005 snarkpit mapping contest, that way the deadlines arn't constantly changed.

I wanted to make something that would be stiched together into one map. That could be another project, it would be hard to ensure everyone was on the level.

that is what I want to do, Myrk was talking about a compitition.
What I want to do is a 1 hour group project, kind of a down scaled project that I am working on right now.
