It's my first MMO, and the one I always suspected would finally make me cave in and try one. It's an incredible game. It's like Diablo 2 in a lot of ways, very item and loot centered but with a worthwhile currency system and hardly any penalties.
That's the best thing about this game. Constant rewards. Everything you do, including logging out and spending time in the real world, benefits your character. Killing stuff gives you experience. Quests always give you experience and a decent item or copper/silver/gold payout. Items break and become unusable, but can always be repaired and they never are destroyed. There's no penalty for death, provided you can find and reach your corpse. And when you log out from a city or inn, you gain resting experience bonuses that give you double experience from monster kills up to a certain xp cap the next time you play.
The world is also really amazing... Further proof (like Half-Life 2, but even moreso) that solid art direction is one of the biggest factors in how impressive a game world can be.
For any of you who do play, I play in a guild of co-workers on Azgalor and go by the name Qungfeuskrl. Yes, that's a lame name. I know. [addsig]

Is this not a "Pay to Play" game?
if so... not likely to enter my home.. if not, then I will definitely want to check it out.
on a side note, I am so excited... Empire Earth II will be out shortly. I am even more hyped than I ever was for HL2.
Seriously though, I don't think any game is worth paying twice to play it.

Beyond that, you can pay in various month increments. I chose the 3 month increment, which basically equates to the cost of ~1 39.99 game every 3 months. Looking at it that way made it seem a little more pleasant
On a side note, have you seen the game that Stainless Steel (original creators of Empire Earth and Empires) is working on right now? Might want to check it out for one who has liked their games in the past

I'm quite tempted by the game but realise I'll probably get sucked in and play too much, much like my flatmates. Instead I'm gonna continue buying some of the recent Xbox releases - Project Zero 2 was every bit as fun and frightening as the first game (best survival horror games EVARR!!), and Otogi 2 is more of the same but having 6 characters instead of 1 and new levels is plent incentive for me to waste many more hours unlocking everything and maxing stats

Shame as it looks really good fun, and there's already a well established guild attached to another forum I browse. Maybe the next time

However, I never stuck with any of them long enough to reach max level, except DaoC when it first came out ( I had no life at the time). I just don't have the patience for that sort of thing.
That being said, if you *do* have the the time available, and you have a group of dedicated friends to play with, then WoW is likely worth checking out. Don't do EQ2 though...it was Teh SuX0rz

. To hop to level 10-15 took me 3 days! I can only imagine ill be able to pass 1 level a day, and then 1 level a week, but the rewards are great!

I just started playing WoW and I must say that it's pretty awesome. I've always wanted to play an MMORPG but never really had the opportunity, plus I felt that none of the available options were worth playing for any length of time. WoW is very close to what I imagined my perfect MMORPG would be: horde vs alliance combat, tons of quests, PvP, a bunch of crafting skills just for the hell of it, no sense of grinding, and most importantly a real sense of purpose when you're playing. I'm not gaining levels so that I can move to the next area but so I can get one step closer to marching into horde territory and killing them all. The name Yakfighter will be feared across Kalimdor!
Just yesterday I came this close to killing a very high level Undead mage with a level 19 warrior ![]()

Looks great but the monthly subscription fee is a big turn off for me as I doubt I would get my moneys worth in game time (too much other stuff to do
).
I'm going to wait for Guild Wars as it's got no monthly charges, is really good fun, and you can drop in and out when you please without feeling like you're missing something.

But from what I've seen from WoW, it looks stylish. Reminds me a bit of Beyond Good and Evil. The things I've heard also sound like it has some interesting gameplay mechanics. I'd say, have fun with it!

I got it for Christmas and have been playing it since. I love this game.
If you want to find me I'm in the Terenas realm and I'm playing as a Nightelf Druid level 30, my name is Emogilo and I'm running a guild which is working out great.
P.S. when did Snarktpit come back up?

btw, it seems it's a rule to make female elf characters hotter than any other races in any game. I wonder why... [addsig]
