We're going to look into server stats here and some other gubbins.

However all kudos for this server must go to Gwil, not me!

200 ping in california....eek

Dm_swamplight should be finished this weekend. All beta versions have gotten good response from players (you'll find it rotating on some server, most times). The map is a good size for almost any group, also. Would love to see it in rotation.

350ish ping for me. It's not a good ping, but it is tolerable.

Rabid's dm_petrol perhaps? This has inspired me to begin working on Exodus again, and hopefully it could get on the cycle. :o

My only concern about this server is that there might end up being too much maps. I say we get rid of the official maps and have only custom maps. Even then, good maps will continue to come out, and it will reach the point where there are too many maps. We need some kind of vote thing for the best maps to stay in.

I would also like to know whether this server will be used to playtest peoples maps. Chuck the map onto the server for a while so the mapper can get some feedback on gameplay. Will it be used like this? [addsig]

That'd be pretty nice, much better than releasing a (totally) public beta.

I can't see that working too well. Who will moderate it? If the server is full of people, do we just boot em, so john-doe can look at his map? Who has rcon?

Seems to me, the easiest thing would be to keep the rotation solid, fairly small, and consistent. Maybe rotate the good custom maps in and out, on weekly cycles, but keep the maplist short. Or, pick a group of maps that we have deemed acceptable, have a fairly large rotation, and create a map-pack of those maps, downloadable here. Then, every couple of months, swap some custom maps with new content and create current maplist download.

Maybe we need Juim to give advice - he's had some good experience running servers.

Well, quite simply, the people can stay on the server... They'll need to download the map, but thats it. Gwil, atm, has rcon (I think) - so he could temporarily chuck the map on for... 45 minutes to an hour or so. It would of course be an inconvenience, but I'm sure people could put up with it.

Of course, the map would have to be in beta stage. No half finished, not textured maps. Just beta maps in which the author needs feedback on gameplay. [addsig]

Eek, not unless you want to cause the server to blow up in a bout of lag

Just played on the server, and I must say - very nice!! Even with 150 ping, It felt very smooth. Handled Overwatch, with a full crowd, without any of the crazy lagg that Overwatch usually brings. Definately plan on becoming a regular there.

Oh, and gg Sloth!

Played it this morning and I am extremely impressed. Despite the fact that I got a ping of 450 (Looks like I'm winning so far ) I still managed to get some decent frags and have a good time. The biggest issue was the effect lag had on kills. Often I would blast people point blank with a double shot from the shotty and it wouldn't kill them. Or I would empty an entire clip of the SMG or AR2 and not kill em either. Apart from that it was a blast, top notch work there Gwil. I'll have to make a map that'll run on it .

Tough luck. My ping was 85 yesterday and you all saw how full the server was.

If it still doesn't have a password (it didn't yesterday) then gwil, hit yourself and re-initiate it. Its always filled with random hobos! [addsig]

I had a good battle on the server last night until hldm crashed . Island17 looks superb and give my pc a full workout though it was still fun. I was only onthere for an hour or so and there was at different times two kids singing songs non stop. Ive never had that before except on cs lol.

Gonna have another bash in a bit.

Myrk, I remove the password because I didn't particularly want to pay ?420 to see a server not get used. There's also no point in elitism when the whole idea is to get Snarkpit users maps out there to the public

Also i've paid the extra fee to remove the password and it shall stay that way until we have some themed nights, or organised playtests. Like I say, the main driving idea was to get mass recognition for some of the creations that are produced by our users, yet might never see the light of day on servers. A great shame if they don't really, because that's what we all want from a map, surely? People to actually play it!

Also if I hadn't paid the password fee and handed it out willy nilly on here, I'm pretty sure it would have broken the terms and conditions

Anyhoo, latest changes:

Changed mp_flashlight to 0 for optimised performance.
Changed mp_falldamage to 10 - no more broken legs on Island17 and Torque!
Changed mp_chattime to 30. (You can now do the "gg" "unlucky!" friendly chat at the end of maps"
Removed dm_steamlab from the rotation - it's not too hot, and it crashed the server THREE times (at least) yesterday.
--

The future?

  • Organised playtests to go hand in hand with "Maps" forum only. Beta works can be scheduled for playtests, ran by a volunteer admin, and developed in conjuction with the self styled "critiques" we have all come to know and love.
  • Organised fun nights! Team matches, intersite matches, even clan wars can be ran from the server. An example would be "Friday Night Team Frag Fest" (or something) - signups start in the day and we allocate teams from the memberbase ONLY to have a CTF/TDM session.
  • Plugins - stats, map voting, vote to kick nuisance players, map extend - etc etc etc. I've started looking around for these already.

So far all the feedback and suggestions people have submitted have been great, and i'll be looking at all the maps offered for the rotation today, with a view to installing some later this evening. I know everyone is eager, but we have had only had the server, 2 days?

Another thing I need to do before the end of the month is appoint some users to hold the rcon password, and one/two to keep the FTP up to date. I won't be here as of April to keep the custom map packs up to date and uploaded, so i'll be looking into this ASAP.

If it's password free then you should name some admins (ppl who have broadband at home) to make sure gameplay goes smooth.

What I'd like to see is a link between Steam ID and user accounts on the website, so that stats can be linked in with profiles somehow Would also be neat if people could earn snarkmarks through playing in some form, as in a sense playing on the server (and so playing the custom maps our members are putting out) is contributing to the community and therefore deserves some sort of return I guess.

Opened up the Steam browser to a nice surprise a minute ago as well; not only is the server full, but its also got the lowest ping! What do you think, can we become the premier UK based HL2DM server?

Well, a player rank page like the ones CS servers have would be cool.
