Get ProxyCap ( http://proxylabs.netwu.com/ ) or any equivalent free tunnelling program. Your requirements will be TCP and UDP tunnelling through your proxy.
What sort of proxy does your host use? If it is a HTTP proxy, chances are you're out of luck. Many HTTP proxies do not allow the CONNECT method which is required for Proxycap to work. I've tried everything I can think of but I cannot get around mine.
If it is a Socks4 or Socks5 proxy ProxyCap should work just fine.
The only problem is latency. It increases considerably through a port80 tunnel, so you will probably get 0wned on most servers. But, like me, if you're just looking for updates this won't affect you at all. The d/l speeds will be similar from what I understand.

i have been meaning to ask this. cannot you people in school get your own internet access without the need to go through your school?
DSL comes via phone lines. i have seen that many dorm rooms have a phone.
course, i could be talking out my ass, or just seen rooms with phones :/

Thanks a lot you guys for your input. I called them several times, but they're not very cooperative (they say they'll call back and then they don't...). I still have my modem but it's too slow: the authentication took several hours, so it'll take me months to download the 30Mb deathmatch... I think I'll try the tunneling trick.
Plus, there's a real revolution going on in here, so I understand those cable guys: they have other things to worry about right now... me too I guess
